Sooryavanshi completes historic IPL season with triple crown

At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has produced one of the most extraordinary seasons in Indian Premier League history.

Despite Rajasthan Royals falling short of the title, Sooryavanshi swept the major individual honours of IPL 2026:

  • Orange Cap (most runs)
  • Most Valuable Player (MVP)
  • Emerging Player of the Season

He became the first player ever to win both the MVP and Emerging Player awards in the same IPL season.

The numbers are staggering

Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 with:

  • 776 runs in 16 innings
  • Strike rate: 237.30
  • 72 sixes (new IPL record)

His six-hitting completely rewrote the record books, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 59 sixes in a season.

He also became the first batter since Gayle in 2011 to finish an IPL season leading both:

  • total runs,
  • and strike rate (minimum 20 balls faced).

A season built on fearless batting

What separated Sooryavanshi from many power hitters was not just brute force, but range and timing.

Sachin Tendulkar called him “truly special” and highlighted his wrist work and ability to access all parts of the ground rather than merely slogging.

That technical quality allowed Sooryavanshi to dominate bowlers across phases:

  • powerplay hitting,
  • spin attacks in middle overs,
  • and death overs against pace.

His fearless intent transformed RR’s batting identity and made them one of the most explosive teams in the tournament.

Signs of maturity beyond his age

Perhaps even more impressive than the numbers was Sooryavanshi’s awareness of adapting to situations.

After receiving the awards, he spoke about learning:

  • how to handle pressure,
  • how to change tempo depending on the match,
  • and the importance of fitness and injury prevention for longevity.

That mindset may be the biggest indicator that this season was not a one-off burst, but potentially the beginning of a long international career.

Rabada takes the Purple Cap

While Sooryavanshi dominated the batting awards, Kagiso Rabada of Gujarat Titans claimed the Purple Cap with:

  • 29 wickets in 17 matches

It was Rabada’s second Purple Cap after previously winning it in 2020.

Meanwhile, GT’s top-order pair of Shubman Gill (732 runs) and B Sai Sudharsan (722 runs) finished second and third respectively in the Orange Cap race.

But IPL 2026 will ultimately be remembered for one thing above all else:
the arrival of a 15-year-old who changed the limits of what seemed possible in T20 cricket.
