Hetmyer returns as West Indies begin 2027 World Cup build-up

Shimron Hetmyer
is back in the ODI plans for West Indies cricket team as the side begins shaping its squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The left-hander has been recalled for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka national cricket team after nearly a year away from the format.

Hetmyer last played an ODI in June 2025 against England and missed subsequent series against Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. He will join the squad ahead of the third ODI of the Sri Lanka series, which begins on June 3 at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

The recall comes on the back of a strong T20 World Cup campaign, where Hetmyer scored 248 runs at an average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 186.46. Though his IPL 2026 stint with Rajasthan Royals was underwhelming, Cricket West Indies believes he remains a key part of their long-term white-ball plans.

Fast-bowling boost for West Indies

The squad also sees the return of Alzarri Joseph, who has recovered from a back injury and is set to play his first international cricket since 2025. Fellow quick Shamar Joseph is also back, while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie returns after missing the New Zealand tour.

Cricket West Indies had earlier indicated that Alzarri, Shamar and Jayden Seales would have their workloads managed carefully ahead of a packed international schedule.

Qualification race adds urgency

West Indies currently sit 10th in the ODI rankings and are battling for automatic qualification to the 2027 World Cup. Only the top eight teams, along with hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will qualify directly.

Head coach Daren Sammy stressed the importance of consistency and discipline ahead of the Sri Lanka series.
“We want to play fearless but intelligent cricket and continue building the identity we believe West Indies cricket should represent.”
