Kohli’s transformation: from control to freedom

Virat Kohli may not have matched the outrageous strike rates of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in IPL 2026, but his evolution has arguably been just as significant.

Kohli finished the season with a strike rate of 165.85 — comfortably the most aggressive full-season version of himself the IPL has seen. Before this, the only time he had crossed a strike rate of 150 in a season was during his iconic 973-run campaign in 2016.

According to Tom Moody, the biggest difference is psychological.

“He’s let himself go and he’s having fun.”

Moody believes Kohli previously approached batting almost like “managing a business” — calculating risk carefully and carrying the burden of holding together Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s innings. This season, though, the tension seems gone.

The numbers show a completely different intent

Kohli attacked nearly every second ball this season:

  • Boundary attempt percentage in powerplay: 47%
  • Overall boundary attempt percentage: 46%

That’s a dramatic shift from earlier seasons where Kohli’s game was built around pacing innings deep.

Ambati Rayudu pointed out that even after hitting boundaries, Kohli now keeps attacking instead of resetting.

That change in instinct has made him far more explosive without sacrificing consistency.

RCB’s stronger middle order changed everything

Varun Aaron believes Kohli’s freedom comes largely from trust in the batting around him.

Earlier RCB sides were heavily dependent on Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle. If Kohli got out early, collapses often followed.

This season’s line-up is much deeper:

  • Rajat Patidar
  • Devdutt Padikkal
  • Tim David
  • Krunal Pandya
  • Phil Salt
  • Venkatesh Iyer

That depth has allowed Kohli to attack without constantly thinking about survival.

Aaron highlighted another interesting statistic: Kohli’s false-shot percentage has also risen significantly. In other words, he is taking more risks and giving bowlers more chances — but accepting that trade-off to maximize scoring.

Evolution with the modern T20 game

The most impressive aspect of Kohli’s reinvention is that it has happened late in his career, while T20 cricket itself keeps evolving.

For years, critics questioned:

  • his strike rate,
  • his tempo in middle overs,
  • and his approach against spin.

IPL 2026 answered most of those doubts.

Rather than abandoning his strengths, Kohli has added aggression on top of them. The result is a batter still capable of anchoring innings — but now doing it at a tempo suited to the modern IPL.

And perhaps for the first time in years, he genuinely looks relaxed doing it.
