Madhya Pradesh beat Bihar by an innings and 174 runs as Saransh Jain claims 13 wickets

Saransh Jain took 7-40 and 6-49 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium as Bihar were bowled out for 99 and 134 inside two days in Indore

Madhya Pradesh beat Bihar by an innings and 174 runs on Tuesday, the second day of their Elite Group A match in the Ranji Trophy.

Bihar won the toss, chose to bat and were dismissed for 99 in 30.3 overs. They lasted 34 overs the second time, losing their last five wickets for 34 to be bowled out for 134.

Madhya Pradesh batted once, declaring on 407 for 8 in 92.2 overs, and did not need to bat again.

Thirteen wickets for the off-spinner

Saransh Jain finished with 13 wickets in the match, taking 7-40 from 13 overs in the first innings and 6-49 in the second.

The first-innings return is his best in an innings of first-class cricket. He has played 59 first-class matches for Madhya Pradesh.

His second-innings wickets came in three ways: two stumpings to the wicketkeeper Saksham Purohit, three lbws and a bowled.

Bihar's first innings lasts 30.3 overs

Avesh Khan struck twice in the opening overs to reduce Bihar to 1 for 2, and finished with 2-13 from four overs.

Mangal Mahrour made 42 from 87 balls, the only score of substance in the innings.

Kumar Kartikeya took the other wicket to fall, finishing with 1-20.

Purohit and Patidar bat Bihar out of the match

Purohit and Yash Dubey opened with a stand of 146, which was 47 more than Bihar had managed in their entire first innings.

Dubey made 84 from 94 balls with 11 fours. Purohit, who kept wicket, went on to 132.

The captain Rajat Patidar was run out for 109, his second hundred in successive matches this season and his 18th in first-class cricket.

Chanchal Rathore made 28, and Amod Yadav took three wickets for Bihar before the declaration came.

Madhya Pradesh lost two wickets in the space of three balls on the opening evening, Rathore and Shubham Sharma both going to Amod Yadav in the same over with the score 206.

Loharuka alone in the second innings

Ayush Loharuka was left unbeaten on 76 from 66 balls, more than half of Bihar's second-innings total.

He came in with Bihar 11 for 1 and was still there when the innings ended, having watched nine partners come and go.

The top order gave him nothing to work with. The captain Sakibul Gani made 8 from 20 balls, Mahrour 4 from 33 and Naman Gaurav 9 from 25, and Bihar had lost four wickets inside 18 overs.

Bihar were 45 for 4 before Loharuka and Sharman Nigrodh, who made 23 from 41 balls, added 55 for the fifth wicket.

That stand ended at 100, and the innings closed 34 runs later. Kartikeya took 2-40 and Avesh Khan one, with one batter run out.

A season after an India debut at 33

Jain is 33 and made his Test debut for India earlier this year, in the second Test against Sri Lanka, where he took three wickets. It remains his only international appearance.

He was the oldest Indian to debut in Test cricket since Robin Singh in 1998, and he was not named in India's squad for the Test series in New Zealand.

Bihar, who had lost their opening two matches of the season, remain without a win in the competition.

Scorecard: Bihar 99 in 30.3 overs (Mangal Mahrour 42; Saransh Jain 7-40, Avesh Khan 2-13) and 134 in 34 overs (Ayush Loharuka 76*, Sharman Nigrodh 23; Saransh Jain 6-49, Kumar Kartikeya 2-40) lost to Madhya Pradesh 407 for 8 declared in 92.2 overs (Saksham Purohit 132, Rajat Patidar 109, Yash Dubey 84) by an innings and 174 runs.
