Roston Chase takes 5-36 as West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in Mirpur

Roston Chase took 5-36 and Brandon King finished unbeaten on 81 as West Indies won the first Test in Mirpur by eight wickets
West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Saturday, reaching a target of 170 for the loss of two wickets in 35.1 overs on the fourth day to go 1-0 up in the two-Test series.
Captain Roston Chase set the win up with 5-36 from 15.4 overs, bowling Bangladesh out for 142 in their second innings after the hosts had resumed the morning on 79 for 6.
Brandon King then made 81 from 115 balls, putting on 112 for the first wicket with John Campbell and hitting the winning boundary off Taijul Islam with a day to spare.
Nayeem’s maiden fifty comes too late
Bangladesh began the fourth day on 79 for 6, 106 in front, with Nayeem Hasan and Jaker Ali both 18 not out after bad light had ended the third day early.
Jaker, a concussion substitute for Mominul Haque, lasted one ball of the morning, out for 22, caught by Chase at slip off Jomel Warrican.
Nayeem stayed to make a career-best 52 from 91 balls, his maiden Test fifty and a long way past a previous best of 35 not out. He was dropped twice along the way, on 21 and again on 29.
He was the last man out, miscuing Chase to long on, where Joshua Bishop took the catch. Bangladesh were all out for 142 in 48.4 overs.
Chase and Warrican share the second innings
Chase had taken 3-25 by the close on the third evening and added two more on the fourth morning to finish with 5-36 from 15.4 overs, his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Warrican took four wickets in the innings to go with his 5-53 in the first, and between them the two spinners accounted for nine of the ten Bangladesh wickets. Shamar Joseph took the other.
The pitch had been breaking up since the third day, when Bangladesh lost six wickets for 53 either side of a rain break, and nothing about it improved overnight.
Campbell and King take the chase away
A target of 170 on a worn Mirpur pitch has undone better batting line-ups than this one, but the chase was effectively settled inside 21 overs.
Campbell made 49 before Shoriful Islam bowled him with a ball that nipped back from outside off stump, ending an opening stand of 112.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul fell for 1, caught at fine leg by Taijul off Hasan Mahmud, and that was the last encouragement Bangladesh had.
Kavem Hodge made 31 from 27 balls and was there with King at the finish. Rain and bad light broke the day up repeatedly — West Indies were 8 without loss at lunch and 87 without loss at a later stoppage — without ever threatening the result.
Reifer’s promise delivered
West Indies batting coach Floyd Reifer had been unambiguous about the chase the evening before. "Whatever score they give us tomorrow, we are going to chase it down," he said, adding of his bowlers that "we bowled in disciplined areas, stuck to our team plans and everyone really hustled out there in the heat."
Nayeem, speaking after the same day’s play, had set a more modest marker. "Even 200 runs would be a very good total, but we will try to score more," he said. Bangladesh were bowled out 58 short of that figure.
A third straight home defeat to West Indies
It is the third Test in a row that Bangladesh have lost to West Indies at home, and it wastes a first-innings lead built on Shadman Islam’s century in a total of 272 and Nayeem’s 4-33, which included his 50th Test wicket.
West Indies were bowled out for 245 in reply, Tagenarine Chanderpaul grinding out 56 from 184 balls and Chase stranded on 43 not out. "It is unfortunate that we didn’t get past their total," Reifer said at the time.
The second Test begins at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on 5 November, with Bangladesh needing a win to square a series they led on first innings here.
Scorecard: Bangladesh 272 and 142 (Nayeem Hasan 52, Roston Chase 5-36); West Indies 245 and 170 for 2 (Brandon King 81 not out, John Campbell 49). West Indies won by eight wickets.
