Bangladesh face India in the 11th place play-off after two last-ball defeats in Hong Kong
Bangladesh and India meet for 11th place at the Hong Kong Sixes on Sunday as the only two sides left in the tournament without a win
Bangladesh went out of the Bowl bracket on Saturday when South Africa chased down 129 for 4 at the Mission Road Ground, reaching 132 for 5 off the final delivery to win by one wicket. It was the second time in two days that a Bangladesh match had been settled by a six off the last ball.
India lost the other Bowl semi-final to England by three runs, and the two beaten sides now play off for 11th place on the closing day of the tournament.
Both have played three and lost three. Every other team in the twelve-team field has won at least once.
Beaten by a six off the final ball
South Africa needed five from the last ball of the Bowl semi-final. Jorich van Schalkwyk, who finished 77 not out from 20 balls, hit it for six.
Bangladesh had given themselves something to defend. Habibur Rahman Sohan made 54 from 13 balls before retiring on reaching his fifty under the tournament's rules, then returned at the end of the innings and struck another six to finish 60 not out from 14.
Captain Abu Hider Rony was unbeaten on 28 from 10 balls and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury made 26 from six before falling on the penultimate delivery. Abu Hider also took 2-41, removing Ayabulela Gqamane after the South African had taken four sixes from the over.
Three defeats, all batting first
Bangladesh have set a target in each of their three matches and been caught every time.
Their opener against Scotland followed the same script as Saturday's exit. Bangladesh made 94 for 5, Finlay McCreath answered with 53 from 20 balls, and Jack Jarvis hit a six off the final delivery with four needed.
Sri Lanka then chased 127 for 4 with four balls to spare, Vishen Halambage making 80 not out from 17 balls, and Bangladesh finished bottom of Group B.
Sohan's run of fifties
The one steady return for Bangladesh has been Sohan's batting. He made 25 in the opener, then 57 not out from 15 balls against Sri Lanka and 60 not out against South Africa.
Sabbir Rahman's 39 from 12 balls against Sri Lanka has been the next-best score by a Bangladesh batter.
Bangladesh have passed 125 in two of their three innings and lost both, which leaves the bowling as the side's unresolved problem going into the play-off.
India arrive without a win either
India, captained by Krunal Pandya, lost to Pakistan by four wickets, then finished bottom of Group C when the United Arab Emirates answered 94 for 6 with 97 without loss, winning by six wickets with 10 balls remaining.
In the Bowl semi-final England posted 124 for 2 and held India to 121 for 4. Rahul Tripathi finished 56 not out from 14 balls with seven sixes and Krunal was 28 not out from seven, but England's total, built on Martin Andersson's 51 from 13 balls, proved three too many.
Shashank Singh's 29 from nine balls was the other score of note for India, who lost Nitish Rana in the first over.
What the play-off decides
Neither side can reach the Bowl final, which South Africa and England contest later on Sunday. The 11th place match decides only which of them avoids finishing last of the twelve teams.
Afghanistan and Australia meet in the Cup final on the same day, with Oman playing Pakistan in the Plate final and Scotland facing the United Arab Emirates for third place.
The Hong Kong Sixes is played six a side over six overs an innings, with batters retiring on reaching fifty and allowed to return once the rest of the order is out.
The 11th place play-off starts at 9.40am local time at the Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok, 7.10am IST.
