Rain halts India's chase at 54 for 1 after Jamieson removes Rohit at Eden Park
Rain has stopped play at Eden Park with India 54 for 1 in pursuit of 186 in the first one-day international against New Zealand
India had faced 10.5 overs of their chase when the drizzle over Auckland turned heavy enough to send the players off and the groundstaff on, leaving the tourists 132 runs short with 235 balls of the innings still to come.
Virat Kohli and the India captain Shubman Gill were together at the interruption, having put on 53 for the second wicket after Rohit Sharma fell without scoring inside the opening exchanges.
New Zealand, asked to bat after Gill won the toss, had been bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs, a total they owed almost entirely to their middle order and a late flurry from the tail.
Jamieson strikes with the new ball
Rohit lasted six balls. He pushed at Kyle Jamieson and found Mitchell Santner, who dived at mid-off to hold the catch and give New Zealand the start they needed.
Jamieson had 1 for 14 from his first three overs, bowling on a surface that had spent much of the afternoon under covers.
Jacob Duffy shared the opening burst and was driven through the off side for four by Gill, while Blair Tickner conceded seven runs from his single over of the chase.
Kohli and Gill steady the reply
Kohli opened his account with two fours and had moved to 24 from 24 balls at the ten-over mark, with Gill the more watchful of the pair on 17 from 30.
Between them they saw off the first powerplay without further loss, India scoring at close to five an over against a target that asked for only 3.72.
The second-wicket stand was worth 53 when the umpires called the players in, with nine wickets standing and the better part of 40 overs in hand.
Rain returns in the 11th over
The weather had already shaped the day. Rain delayed the toss at Eden Park before Gill chose to bowl, and the showers came back during the 11th over of India's reply.
What began as a drizzle grew heavier until the umpires took the players off and the covers were pulled across the square. No restart time was given.
How New Zealand were held to 185
Gill's decision to bowl was rewarded early, Arshdeep Singh removing Will Young and Henry Nicholls for nine apiece to leave the hosts two down inside the first ten overs.
Arshdeep finished with 4 for 70 and Gurnoor Brar took 3 for 44, with Anshul Kamboj adding 2 for 22 as New Zealand lost wickets in clusters either side of the halfway mark.
Axar Patel was the most economical of the Indian bowlers, conceding just 12 runs from five overs of left-arm spin. Tim Seifert top-scored with 38 from 43 balls, Glenn Phillips made 30 from 51 and Daryl Mitchell 28 from 41 before he was run out.
New Zealand were nine down for 146 when the tail intervened. Blair Tickner struck 34 from 23 balls with four sixes, and Jacob Duffy finished unbeaten on 15 to carry the total past 180.
The equation when play resumes
If the match goes its full distance India need 132 from 235 balls, a rate of 3.37 an over with nine wickets in hand.
Any overs lost to the weather would bring the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method into the reckoning, with India one wicket down and ahead of the asking rate when play stopped.
A win would put the tourists 1-0 up in the five-match series.
Scorecard: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34, Glenn Phillips 30, Arshdeep Singh 4-70, Gurnoor Brar 3-44, Anshul Kamboj 2-22); India 54 for 1 in 10.5 overs, rain stopped play.
