India bowl New Zealand out for 185 at Eden Park as Tickner's late sixes lift the tail

New Zealand were bowled out for 185 inside 41 overs in the first ODI at Eden Park, with Blair Tickner's late sixes the only sustained resistance to a disciplined India attack

India's decision to bowl first in Auckland was rewarded inside the opening hour and never seriously questioned afterwards. New Zealand were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs, a total assembled from partial contributions rather than any substantial innings.

Arshdeep Singh finished with 4-70 from his ten overs, the most wickets of the innings, though the control came from the other end. Anshul Kamboj returned 10-2-22-2, conceding barely more than two an over across a full spell, while Gurnoor Brar took 3-44 from 9.2 overs.

New Zealand were 146 for 9 in the 36th over and appeared likely to be dismissed well inside 40. That they reached 185 owed almost entirely to Tickner, who made 34 from 23 balls with four sixes.

Arshdeep strikes with the new ball

Will Young fell in the fifth over, caught by Shreyas Iyer for 9 from 11 balls with the score on 22. Henry Nicholls followed for an identical 9, taken by Naman Dhir in the ninth over to leave New Zealand 40 for 2.

Tim Seifert gave the innings its first momentum, striking three fours and two sixes in a 43-ball 38 before Brar had him caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad at 73 for 3.

Tom Latham lasted eleven balls for 3, caught and bowled by Brar in the 17th over, and New Zealand passed the halfway stage without a batter reaching 40.

A run out turns the middle overs

Daryl Mitchell had settled into the most assured innings of the morning when he was run out for 28 from 41 balls, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul combining to break the stumps with New Zealand 97 for 5 in the 22nd over.

The dismissal removed the one batter who had looked capable of building through the middle period, and the innings never recovered its shape.

From 97 for 5, New Zealand lost four wickets for 49 runs across the next fourteen overs, with no stand of consequence until the last.

Kamboj squeezes from one end

Kamboj's spell was the most economical of the innings. He bowled Mitchell Santner for 4 from 16 balls in the 27th over, then had Nathan Smith caught by Virat Kohli for 1 two overs later.

Those wickets left New Zealand 115 for 7, and two maidens in a ten-over allocation denied the lower order any release at that end.

Axar Patel was similarly restrictive without reward, conceding 12 runs from five overs, while Auqib Nabi went wicketless for 33 from six.

Tickner lifts the tail past 180

Kyle Jamieson was caught by Kohli for 1 in the 32nd over, and Glenn Phillips, who had laboured to 30 from 51 balls, became the ninth wicket to fall at 146 in the 36th.

Tickner then took on Arshdeep directly, hitting three sixes in the 38th over as the last pair added 39 runs for the final wicket.

Jacob Duffy held the other end for an unbeaten 15 from 21 balls before Tickner holed out to Rahul off Brar in the 41st over to close the innings.

What India need

India require 186 to take the lead in the series, with the full fifty overs available after New Zealand used only 40.2 of theirs.

Extras contributed 13 to the New Zealand total, including eight wides, and no batter in the innings faced more than 51 balls.

India used five bowlers and three of them conceded under five an over, with Arshdeep the only one to go at more than six despite taking the most wickets.

Scorecard: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34, Glenn Phillips 30, Daryl Mitchell 28; Arshdeep Singh 4-70, Gurnoor Brar 3-44, Anshul Kamboj 2-22) v India.
