Kohli's 74 carries India to a five-wicket DLS win over New Zealand at Eden Park

India opened their five-match one-day series in New Zealand with a five-wicket win at Eden Park, Virat Kohli's 74 settling a chase that rain had cut to 143

India reached a revised Duckworth-Lewis-Stern target of 143 in 22.4 overs on Wednesday, closing on 143 for 5 with 56 balls to spare after New Zealand had been bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs.

Kohli made 74 from 51 balls with 13 fours and a six, and added 113 for the second wicket with the captain, Shubman Gill, after Rohit Sharma had fallen in the first over of the reply.

Anshul Kamboj took the match award for 2-22 from his 10 overs, 46 of them dot balls, in an innings New Zealand never managed to build.

Two stoppages and a shrinking target

Rain delayed the toss and stayed close all afternoon. Gill won it and put New Zealand in, a decision the weather kept rewarding.

The first interruption took the players off during India's reply and cost about 25 minutes, reducing the match to 40 overs a side and leaving India 167 to win.

A second shower arrived soon after the resumption and held play up for another half hour. When the covers came off the target had been trimmed again, to 143 from 32 overs, with 79 still needed from the 20 overs that remained.

Kohli's 80th one-day fifty

Rohit was caught by Mitchell Santner off Kyle Jamieson for a six-ball duck in the opening over, and the revised equation still had teeth when Kohli walked in.

He reached fifty from 35 deliveries, BCCI's match feed noting that he "gets to his 80th ODI half-century in just 35 deliveries", and finished with 13 fours and a six at better than a run a ball.

Gill held the other end for 37 from 56 balls with five fours before Nathan Smith had him caught by Tom Latham in the 19th over. Their partnership had all but decided the match by then.

Jacob Duffy struck twice in three balls to end the stand's effect, Kohli caught by Tim Seifert at deep backward square leg and Axar Patel caught by Glenn Phillips for a duck, but India were close enough for it not to matter.

Kamboj and Arshdeep share the work

Kamboj's 10 overs cost 22 at an economy rate of 2.20 and brought two wickets, the tightest spell of the day on either side.

Arshdeep Singh took the most wickets, 4-70 from his 10 overs, while Gurnoor Brar claimed three, having Seifert caught and then holding a return catch to remove Latham.

Axar conceded nine runs in four overs. Daryl Mitchell, run out for 28 from 41 balls, was the only New Zealand batter dismissed without a bowler's name against him.

Tickner lifts New Zealand past 180

Seifert top-scored with 38 from 43 balls and Phillips made 30 from 51, but New Zealand lost wickets steadily either side of them and were nine down with the innings unfinished.

Blair Tickner then hit 34, four of his scoring shots clearing the rope and three of those coming in the 38th over, in a last-wicket stand worth 39.

Those runs took New Zealand to 185 in 40.2 overs. The rain that followed removed most of what they were worth.

Wellington on Saturday

India lead the series 1-0 with four to play, and the second one-day international is in Wellington on Saturday.

Gill captains India for the first three matches, with Shreyas Iyer taking charge for the last two. Santner leads New Zealand throughout.

India came into the series having won the preceding Twenty20 international series 3-2.

Scorecard: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34, Glenn Phillips 30; Arshdeep Singh 4-70, Anshul Kamboj 2-22); India 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs (Virat Kohli 74, Shubman Gill 37). India won by five wickets by the DLS method.
