Karnataka beat Assam by an innings and 314 runs to go top of Elite Group B

Karnataka completed an innings-and-314-run win over Assam inside three days at Barsapara Cricket Stadium to move to the top of Elite Group B

Assam won the toss, chose to bat and were dismissed for 135 in 48.1 overs on the opening day. By the time they batted again, 442 behind, Karnataka had declared on 577 for 6 and the match was beyond saving.

The second innings lasted 40.2 overs. Shreyas Gopal took 4-39 and Shikhar Shetty 3-28 as Assam were bowled out for 128, with only Denish Das, who made 50 from 74 balls, passing 25.

Karnataka's batting had already settled the match. KV Aneesh made 145 from 254 balls and Manvanth Kumar finished unbeaten on 100, his second hundred of the season.

Spinners set the tone on day one

Assam's decision to bat first lasted less than a session and a half. Rithesh Bhatkal and Shikhar Shetty took all ten wickets between them, Bhatkal finishing with 5-35 from 18 overs and Shetty with 5-53 from 17.1.

Sibsankar Roy top-scored with 37 from 66 balls and Denish Das made 26, but no partnership of consequence formed around them.

The match had been scheduled to run to November 5. Karnataka needed three days of it.

Karnataka closed the first day on 180 for 2 from 36 overs, already 45 runs ahead, with Rohan Patil having made 89 from 87 balls and Mayank Agarwal unbeaten on 57. Play ended early for bad light.

Karnataka bat Assam out of the match

The second day belonged to the middle order. Aneesh batted through most of it for his 145, a long, deliberate innings of 254 balls that took the lead past 300 and then past 400.

Karnataka resumed the third morning on 496 for 5 and declared on 577 for 6 from 133.2 overs, a first-innings lead of 442.

Karnataka batted for 133.2 overs in that innings, more than Assam lasted across both of theirs, which came to 88.3 overs in all.

Assam's bowlers had little to show for the long haul. Roshan Alam took 3-176 from 34 overs and Amlanjyoti Das 2-132 from 38.

Manvanth's second hundred of the season

Manvanth Kumar's unbeaten hundred came from 108 balls with eight fours and five sixes, the quickest scoring of the innings and the passage that moved the declaration within reach.

It followed his maiden first-class century, made against Saurashtra at Alur a fortnight earlier, and gives the all-rounder two hundreds in a season that is only four rounds old.

Assam fold a second time

Facing a deficit of 442, Assam needed to bat out the best part of two days. They lasted 40.2 overs.

Gopal's 4-39 from 12 overs did the damage through the middle, and Shetty's 3-28 from 15.1 overs took his match haul to eight wickets.

Das offered the only resistance with 50 from 74 balls, and Swarupam Purkayastha made 22. Assam's two innings together totalled 263, 314 fewer than Karnataka managed in one.

Karnataka move top of Group B

The win was worth seven points, a bonus point included, and lifted Karnataka to 16 points at the head of Elite Group B. Assam took nothing from the match.

Assam were beaten inside three days on their own ground, undone by a batting order that did not pass 135 in either innings.

It is the kind of return Karnataka have been chasing since the season began, and it was built on the same combination that has carried them through the early rounds: a long first innings, and spinners who bowl sides out twice.

Scorecard: Assam 135 (48.1 ov) and 128 (40.2 ov); Karnataka 577 for 6 declared (133.2 ov). Karnataka won by an innings and 314 runs.
