Woakes Set for England Lions Return; Archer Ruled Out, Stokes in Contention

Chris Woakes will test his fitness for England's upcoming five-Test series against India by featuring in the England Lions’ two-match red-ball series against the touring India A side, starting later this month. The veteran seamer, who has been recovering from an ankle injury, is looking to reclaim his spot in the Test side after an impressive 2023 Ashes campaign. Ben Stokes could also feature in one of the fixtures, depending on how he fares in his comeback Test against Zimbabwe this week at Trent Bridge.

However, Jofra Archer will not make his long-awaited red-ball return as initially planned. The fast bowler has been ruled out of the second Lions match at Northampton (June 6-9) due to a right-thumb injury sustained during the IPL. His absence delays what could have been his first first-class appearance since 2021.

England's selectors have named a strong 15-man Lions squad, captained by Somerset’s James Rew. The squad features a mix of experienced names and rising stars, including Essex’s Jordan Cox, Durham opener Ben McKinney, and the Ahmed brothers — Rehan and Farhan — making headlines with their spin-bowling potential. Left-arm seamer Josh Hull, who debuted in Tests last summer, also makes the cut.

The Lions series presents a valuable platform for players on the fringes of Test selection, especially ahead of a busy Test summer against India and Australia.
