Why IPL Teams Rushed Into Late Replacement Signings Before the Playoffs

Several IPL franchises made a surprising wave of late replacement signings just before the end of the IPL 2026 league stage, but the moves were driven by a mix of tactical planning, squad security and long-term strategy rather than desperation alone.

Kolkata Knight Riders signed wicketkeeper-batter Luvnith Sisodia as a replacement for injured fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians brought in Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir, while Rajasthan Royals added Emanjot Chahal to their squad.

The key reason behind these signings lies within IPL replacement regulations. Under league rules, franchises are permitted to replace injured or unavailable players even if those players miss just one remaining league match, provided the injury is officially certified as season-ending by a BCCI-approved doctor.

For KKR, the move was primarily about maintaining squad balance and emergency cover. With Angkrish Raghuvanshi ruled out because of concussion and a finger injury, the team was left with limited wicketkeeping depth during a period when playoff qualification was still mathematically possible.

Rajasthan Royals, already playoff-bound, similarly wanted additional squad depth and injury cover ahead of a potentially extended knockout campaign.

Mumbai Indians’ strategy, however, appears to have been more future-focused. Since franchises are not allowed to sign replacement players after their final league match, MI used the opportunity to quietly strengthen their pool for next season without entering an auction battle later. IPL regulations allow franchises to retain replacement players for subsequent seasons if contracts are extended.

An additional advantage is financial flexibility. Replacement-player fees do not count toward the salary cap during the current season, making such signings an attractive low-risk investment for franchises planning ahead.

The late flurry of recruitment therefore highlighted how IPL teams increasingly use replacement rules not just for emergency injury management, but also as a strategic tool for squad building, future retention planning and maintaining playoff readiness.
