Warrican takes 5-53 as Bangladesh lose seven for 59 after Shadman Islam's century

Shadman Islam reached his third Test century on the second morning in Mirpur, and Bangladesh then lost their last seven wickets for 59 runs around him

Bangladesh resumed on 213 for 3 and were bowled out for 272 in 97.4 overs on day two of the first Test against West Indies at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the innings folding inside a single session after Shadman had moved to 105.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican finished with 5-53, the fifth five-wicket haul of his Test career, and debutant Joshua Bishop took two wickets in his first innings in the format.

West Indies closed on 130 for 4 from 48 overs, trailing by 142 runs, after bad light shortened a second successive day at the ground.

Shadman converts and falls

Shadman had finished the opening day unbeaten on 96, having batted through most of it after Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat, and he needed only a handful of deliveries on the second morning to reach three figures.

His 105 contained 11 fours and was his third hundred in Test cricket. It ended an over later, trapped in front by Bishop for the Barbadian spinner's first Test wicket.

Towhid Hridoy, who had been stretchered off on day one with cramp, returned to make 42 before playing across the line at Bishop and losing his stumps. Mominul Haque made 28 and Najmul Hossain Shanto 19.

Seven wickets for 59 runs

The fourth wicket fell at 221 and the rest went quickly. Bangladesh's last five wickets produced 19 runs between them.

Warrican bowled Mehidy Hasan Miraz with a ball that went straight on, then removed Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam with consecutive deliveries to end the innings and complete his five-for. Shamar Joseph took the other two wickets.

Litton Das was left unbeaten on 34 from 88 balls with four fours, the top score of the collapse. His stand of 32 with Miraz was the only partnership of the morning that carried the total anywhere.

Litton Das off the field again

Litton was struck on the right elbow more than once while batting and did not take the field when West Indies began their reply.

Bangladesh's physiotherapist, Bayjedul Islam Khan, said in a release that "Litton Das has sustained a contusion to his right elbow after being struck while batting in Bangladesh's first innings", adding that the wicketkeeper was being monitored.

Jaker Ali, who was not in the playing eleven, kept wicket in his place, having been seen practising with the gloves during the lunch interval. Litton had been a doubt for this Test in any case, a hip problem having kept him out of the recent tri-nation series.

Campbell counters for West Indies

West Indies opened with 29 runs from 29 balls before Hasan Mahmud found the edge of Brandon King's bat with an outswinger, King making 15 from 20 balls and Jaker Ali taking the catch.

John Campbell then took the innings away from Bangladesh, reaching fifty from 61 balls — his sixth in Tests and his third in succession — and striking Miraz for four and six in consecutive deliveries. He was 53 not out from 65 balls at the interval, with six fours and two sixes.

Bangladesh twice let him go. Nayeem Hasan put him down at backward point on 5 off Hasan Mahmud, and Shoriful Islam could not hold a return catch when Campbell was on 22. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was 21 not out from 77 balls.

A second day cut short by the light

Tea was taken early, at 2pm, with West Indies 89 for 1 from 27 overs and the floodlights already on, the light reading having dropped below the level that was deemed playable a day earlier.

Three wickets fell for 41 runs in what remained of the day, leaving West Indies 142 behind with six wickets standing and the first innings still to be settled.

Day one had also finished ahead of schedule for the same reason, and the two shortened days have cost the match the better part of a session's play.

Scorecard: Bangladesh 272 all out in 97.4 overs (Shadman Islam 105, Towhid Hridoy 42, Litton Das 34 not out; Jomel Warrican 5-53) and West Indies 130 for 4 in 48 overs, trailing by 142 runs at the close of day two.
