Washington Sundar set to rejoin India squad; Bumrah missed USA clash with high fever

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that Washington Sundar will rejoin the squad in Delhi ahead of their next T20 World Cup fixture against Namibia on February 12. Speaking after India’s tense 29-run win over USA, Suryakumar said the allrounder had recovered well from injury and was ready to link up with the team.

“Washy is joining us in Delhi,” Suryakumar said. “He is good, everything is fine.”

Washington has been sidelined since suffering a side strain during the first ODI against New Zealand last month. Although he missed the remainder of that series and has not played competitive cricket since, India chose not to name a replacement in their T20 World Cup squad, with team management confident the injury was minor and unlikely to impact their core plans.

India were also without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the USA game, with Suryakumar revealing the quick had been laid low by illness. “He was having a high fever because of the weather,” he said. “Like how Abhishek [Sharma] was under the weather. But the rest everything is good.”

On the field, India were given a major scare by USA, who reduced them to 77 for 6 on a challenging Wankhede surface. Suryakumar’s unbeaten 84 off 49 balls proved decisive, lifting India to 161 for 9 — a total that ultimately proved just enough.

While pleased with the recovery, Suryakumar admitted India’s batting could have been sharper. Drawing on his experience growing up on Mumbai maidans, he said he trusted himself to bat through the innings but felt the side missed opportunities to build smaller partnerships.

“After winning also you get to learn,” he said. “Today we learnt that we could have batted a little better, maybe a little smarter. Two small partnerships could have made a big difference.”
