For all the ease with which Kamindu Mendis has conquered Test cricket, it once felt inevitable that white-ball success would follow just as smoothly. The tools have always been obvious: powerful leg-side hitting dating back to his Under-19 days, confidence against spin, electric athleticism in the field, and the rare bonus of bowling with either arm. On paper, he looks like a T20I cricketer designed in a lab.

Reality, though, has been messier. Unlike his red-ball persona, Kamindu’s white-ball version has carried blemishes—fits and starts, early-innings unease, and a return that never quite matched expectations. Before this match, three fifties in 32 T20I innings told a story of promise without consistency. He even slipped out of favour after the December tri-series in Pakistan, replaced by a player with a similar skillset, forcing him back into the familiar fight to reassert his value.

What links both versions of Kamindu is his comfort batting lower down the order. Just as he has thrived at No. 6 in Tests, he found clarity again when pushed to the same role here. With Sri Lanka stalled after the powerplay and strangled by Ireland’s spinners, the innings needed urgency and imagination. Kamindu supplied both.

His 44 off 19 balls was an exercise in controlled aggression—busy running early, followed by a burst of invention. Cross-batted whips, straight-batted power, subtle movement around the crease, and the confidence to turn one good over into two damaging ones brought Sri Lanka back to life. There was fortune along the way, but that too has often smiled on him in Tests.

More importantly, the innings hinted at a long-term solution Sri Lanka badly need: a genuine No. 6 who can finish games, chip in with spin, and lift the fielding standard across phases. Without this knock, Sri Lanka may have limped to an underwhelming total. With it, they escaped embarrassment—and perhaps uncovered the role Kamindu was always meant to own.
