Trescothick Backs England’s Pace Attack to Follow 2005 Ashes Blueprint

England interim coach Marcus Trescothick believes the team’s current seam attack has similarities to the famous 2005 Ashes-winning bowling unit and is keen to give the same four quicks another opportunity in the third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

England secured a 194-run victory at Lord’s to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Their success has largely been driven by a potent four-man pace attack featuring Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson and Gus Atkinson.

Trescothick has been impressed by the variety within the group and believes continued time together could make the attack even more effective.

“I think we've got a good contrast in what we're trying to do at the moment,” Trescothick said. “We do have some real skill, and you look back to '05 and the sort of comparisons of Harmy, Fred, Simon and Hoggy.”

Archer has provided express pace, taking eight wickets at an average of 21.87, while Tongue has been particularly destructive, claiming 13 wickets at 12.46. Atkinson has offered control and aggression, although his wicket tally does not reflect his impact.

Robinson has been the standout performer. Since returning to the Test side this summer, he has won Player of the Match awards in all three of his appearances. He has taken 16 wickets at 7.18 in the current series and 23 wickets at 8.34 this season.

His overall Test tally now stands at 99 wickets at an average below 20, putting him among the most effective bowlers of the modern era.

Trescothick, who was part of England's 2005 Ashes campaign, believes the current attack can continue to develop as the bowlers gain experience playing alongside one another.

“The more that they play together and the more experience that everyone gets together, then it sort of fits into place,” he said.

England Aim to Stay Ruthless at Edgbaston

With England already having secured the series, there could be temptation to rotate the bowling attack. Trescothick, however, wants the team to maintain its intensity and is prepared to select the same four seamers for the third Test, which begins on September 9.

England have previously been criticised for easing off after securing series wins. Trescothick wants to avoid repeating that mistake and believes consistency will give his attack the best chance to continue developing.

“We want to go there and win the series 3-0,” he said. “It’s not a case of we're going to go there and ease off the gas.”

The long gap between the second and third Tests means the bowlers should have sufficient time to recover, with the squad due to regroup in Birmingham on September 6.

Building Towards South Africa and the Ashes

England's fast bowlers will face tougher tests during the winter, with three Tests scheduled in South Africa followed by two in Bangladesh.

Trescothick believes the experience gained by the current quartet could prove crucial in those conditions and ahead of next summer's Ashes.

He expects England to have five or six fast-bowling options available for the South Africa tour and believes the competition will strengthen the attack.

“If we can combine the pace and skill together, and the more Test matches they gain together, the better opportunity we've got when we go to more challenging conditions, and away from home in particular,” Trescothick said.

For Trescothick, the immediate target is clear: finish the Pakistan series with a clean sweep and ensure England's momentum continues.

“We want to try and continue that on,” he said, stressing that the players must retain their hunger and desire even after achieving success.
