Pakistan Admit Growing Test Concerns as WTC Struggles Continue

Pakistan’s recent Test struggles have become a growing concern, with the team acknowledging shortcomings in batting, bowling and fielding after suffering a heavy 194-run defeat to England at Lord’s.

The loss was Pakistan’s 10th in their last 11 away Tests and followed an innings defeat in the series opener at Leeds. The back-to-back defeats have left Pakistan at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings and highlighted their ongoing difficulties in Test cricket.

Pakistan were once a formidable force in overseas conditions, particularly in England during the late 1980s and 1990s. However, their recent record has reflected a significant decline, with the side struggling to produce consistent performances both at home and abroad.

Seamer Mohammad Abbas admitted that the team is fully aware of the problems and accepts that improvements are urgently needed.

“Our performance is a concern for everyone. Everyone is worried, including the selection committee and the NCA,” Abbas said.

“We're not doing well, we accept that. We're not batting, bowling or fielding well and we discuss this all the time in meetings. We're all working on it.”

Fielding Under the Spotlight

Abbas identified Pakistan’s fielding as one of the biggest areas requiring improvement. Missed opportunities at Lord’s proved costly as England’s batters were allowed to add crucial runs.

“We dropped catches, and their key players scored 70-odd extra runs. That's where the match changed because we could have bowled them out for 200,” Abbas said.

While Abbas himself enjoyed an outstanding match, taking nine wickets and claiming his maiden five-wicket haul at Lord’s, he admitted that individual success means little without team victories.

“Individual performances are important, but I try to perform to help the team win. It's been many matches that I've been performing, but the team hasn't won,” he said.

Lack of Experience a Concern

Abbas also believes Pakistan’s relatively inexperienced pace attack has made it harder for the team to adapt to different conditions.

Pakistan have used different bowling combinations during their recent tours, including in Bangladesh and the West Indies. Although the team secured a Test victory in the Caribbean, Abbas stressed that experience remains crucial in the longest format.

“In Bangladesh, we had a different bowling combination to here. We won a Test in the West Indies. The guys are adjusting, but experience is very important in Test cricket,” he said.

Abbas has played 32 Tests, while fellow fast bowlers Mohammad Ali and Khurram Shahzad have featured in only eight and 10 Tests respectively.

“The fast bowlers playing with me are very new to Test cricket. But everybody is trying to improve,” Abbas added.

Pakistan now have one final opportunity to salvage something from the series when they face England in the third Test at Edgbaston, beginning September 9.

With valuable World Test Championship points at stake, Pakistan will be looking to end their losing run and restore some confidence ahead of the next phase of the campaign.
