Suyash Sharma reveals hernia surgery almost prevented him from playing in IPL 2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legspinner Suyash Sharma has opened up about a serious health setback ahead of IPL 2025, revealing he underwent surgery for multiple hernias that almost kept him out of the start of the tournament. Despite initially being expected to return only after a few matches, Suyash made a surprising recovery and featured in RCB’s opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 22.

“We were training in February, and I’d been dealing with pain for two years,” Suyash said. “I was playing through it with injections, and in India, we couldn’t even pinpoint what the problem was. RCB eventually sent me to London for surgery, where I met our physio James Pipe. He and his family cared for me like their own.”

Suyash revealed he had hernias in three different areas and was told he would likely miss the first few matches. “I had undergone a major surgery and was told I’d only be fit after three or four games. But thanks to Pipey and his support, I made it to the first match. Before that, I had gotten used to playing in pain.”

RCB signed Suyash for INR 2.6 crore at the last mega auction after he was released by KKR, where he had made his IPL debut in 2023, claiming ten wickets in 11 games. In 2024, however, he managed just two appearances and failed to take a wicket before being let go.

Reflecting on the early stages of his injury, Suyash said it was especially tough because he wasn’t affiliated with any team at the time. “When you're part of a franchise or the national team, you can manage to get support. But I had this injury when I wasn’t even playing competitively. A physio misdiagnosed it early on, which made it worse. I’m grateful RCB believed in me and invested in me.”

So far this season, Suyash has featured in nine of RCB's ten matches, taking four wickets at a high average of 69.75. RCB, currently with 14 points, are eyeing a playoff spot and will face Chennai Super Kings next at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
