South Africa can seal the series at the Wanderers as Australia weigh a Cummins return

South Africa need one more win to take the one-day series, and they get their chance at the Wanderers on Sunday with Aiden Markram available again

The second of three ODIs between South Africa and Australia starts at 10am local time in Johannesburg, 1.30pm IST, and it doubles as the annual Pink Day fixture.

South Africa lead 1-0. They made 297 for 8 from their 50 overs in Durban and bowled Australia out for 230 in 41.2, a margin of 67 runs.

Australia have to win to keep the series alive into the last match at Potchefstroom on 30 September.

Spin decided the opener

Matthew Breetzke held the innings together at Kingsmead with 112 from 106 balls after two early wickets, and Marco Jansen's 75 from 59 gave it a finish.

Mitchell Marsh answered with 60 from 36. Australia were 90 inside the tenth over when he fell, and the chase never recovered its shape.

Keshav Maharaj took 4-20 and Bjorn Fortuin 2-34 as the two left-arm spinners squeezed the middle overs. Nathan Ellis, with 3-57, was the best of Australia's bowlers.

Markram returns for the last two

Markram was available only for the second and third ODIs when the squad was picked, so Sunday is his first match of the series.

Kagiso Rabada is out of the one-day matches with a right hamstring injury picked up in training, and is not certain for the Test series that starts on 9 October. Dewald Brevis was left out to play first-class cricket before those Tests.

Gerald Coetzee was recalled having last played an ODI at the 2023 World Cup, and both Quinton de Kock and David Miller were picked without central contracts.

"It's exciting to start our home summer against Australia in what will no doubt be a competitive series," coach Shukri Conrad said when the squad was named, describing the selection as an attempt to build "a middle order that can be explosive but have the ability to absorb pressure".

Cummins waits on a first outing

Pat Cummins is still Australia's ODI captain, but he reached Durban less than 72 hours before the opener and did not play it. The Wanderers is the first of his two remaining chances on this tour.

He has played two ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final. Marsh has led in 13 of Australia's 31 one-day internationals over the same stretch.

"It's a nice little duo. It's working well for us, and they're not territorial around it," coach Andrew McDonald said of the arrangement. McDonald and the head of selection, George Bailey, have both said Cummins remains their choice to lead the defence of the World Cup in southern Africa next year.

"They're two very close mates who think similarly about the game as quite relaxed characters," Mitchell Starc said of the pair.

Carey back behind the stumps

Josh Inglis fractured his right index finger while keeping in Durban and has been ruled out of the rest of the one-day series. He has gone home to Perth for scans, and his place in the Test squad waits on them.

That hands the gloves back to Alex Carey, who was left out at Kingsmead after averaging 19.80 across his last 16 international innings.

Jack Edwards made his ODI debut in Durban as Australia's 254th cap, and Cameron Green played his first match of the tour, though a shoulder problem has limited what he can bowl.

"Those overs are pretty crucial. He can bowl six, seven, even up to 10," Josh Hazlewood said of Green's workload.

Pink Day at the Wanderers

The ground has staged the Pink Day ODI every year since 2013, when Cricket South Africa took the idea from Sydney's Jane McGrath Day.

Money raised goes to the Breast Care Unit at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg, which has received around R10 million since the fixture began. South Africa won the first six editions.

The square is usually true, with pace and carry, and the altitude helps the ball travel.

The series ends at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on 30 September, a day-night match that will decide something only if Australia win on Sunday.
