Virat Kohli has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will be the last World Cup of his India career

The 37-year-old, speaking to broadcaster JioStar, left no room for interpretation about how long his one-day career has left to run. "For me, it's the last World Cup I'm going to play for India. And that is my motivation. Like, you know, to leave everything out there," he said.

It will be his fifth successive appearance at the tournament, and the only one he enters knowing it is the end of the line. Kohli has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, so the 50-over game is all that remains of his international career.

The announcement lands a day before India open their home season against West Indies, with the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Leaving everything out there

Kohli framed the remaining fourteen months as a single objective rather than a farewell tour. "Of course, the goal is absolutely to win the World Cup. And whatever it takes, I'm absolutely ready," he said.

He has spoken before about needing a clear target to train towards, and the 2027 tournament now supplies it. India last won the trophy in 2011, in Kohli's first World Cup.

He has played at every edition since, in 2015, 2019 and 2023, and reached the final of the most recent one.

Ten games at a T20 level of intensity

Asked what makes the 50-over tournament harder than the shorter formats he has left behind, Kohli pointed at the accumulation rather than any single day. "The intensity of a 50-over World Cup is greater than anything. Because now, it's about 10 games at a T20 level of intensity," he said.

He added that sustaining that level across a long tournament, in conditions away from home, is the part that asks the most of a player physically and mentally.

The 2027 tournament is spread across roughly seven weeks of group cricket and knockouts, which is the span Kohli was describing.

The 2027 edition is the first World Cup to be co-hosted by three nations, and the first in Africa since 2003.

The only format he still plays

Kohli retired from T20 internationals immediately after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and from Test cricket in May 2025. Since then his international schedule has narrowed to the handful of ODI series India play each year.

That scarcity has shaped the build-up. India face West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in one-day cricket before the tournament, and those matches are most of the cricket Kohli will play in India colours between now and it.

It also means every innings between now and October 2027 carries more weight than it once would have, both for his own preparation and for the selectors around him.

A record few in the format can match

Kohli goes into the series with 14,941 runs from 302 ODI innings at an average of 58.59, second on the all-time list only to Sachin Tendulkar's 18,426. His 54 ODI centuries are the most anyone has made in the format.

His World Cup record is narrower but no less emphatic: 1,795 runs in 37 matches at 59.83, with five hundreds and 12 fifties.

Only the trophy itself has proved elusive since 2011. India reached the 2023 final in Ahmedabad and lost it to Australia.

A tournament fourteen months away

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 runs from 4 October to 21 November 2027, shared between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Kohli did not say what he intends to do after it, and has made no announcement about his one-day future beyond the tournament.

India's preparation for that tournament begins on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, with the first of three ODIs against West Indies.
