Jos Buttler misses England's ODI decider at the Oval after a hamstring injury

England will play Sunday's one-day international decider against Sri Lanka at the Oval without Jos Buttler, who has been ruled out by the hamstring injury he picked up at Headingley

Buttler pulled up while running between the wickets during the second ODI on Thursday, and the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Saturday that he will take no part in the final match of the three-game series.

Dan Lawrence has been called into the squad in his place. The Surrey batter was withdrawn from his county's Championship match at Taunton and trained with England at the Oval on Saturday morning.

The series is level at 1-1. England won the opener at Chester-le-Street by 89 runs before Sri Lanka answered at Headingley, where they won by 16 runs to force a decider.

Pulled up between the wickets

Buttler was midway through an innings of 69 from 49 balls, struck with five fours and five sixes, when he felt his left hamstring turning for a second run. He received treatment on the field before resuming.

England have not put a timeframe on the injury. The ECB said he would undergo further assessment, and a scan early next week is expected to establish how long he is likely to be out.

"Jos Buttler has been ruled out due to the hamstring injury he suffered in the second Metro Bank ODI at Headingley last night and will undergo further assessment," an ECB spokesperson said in confirming the change.

Lawrence called in from Taunton

Lawrence arrives in form. He was dismissed for 139 at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Friday, his sixth Championship hundred of the season.

He has played Test cricket for England but is yet to win a white-ball cap, and a first one-day international appearance would come on his home ground.

Surrey's match against Somerset runs into a fourth day on Sunday, so the call-up costs the county a batter in that kind of touch with the Division One title still undecided.

England's shape without their keeper

Buttler's absence leaves England short of a wicketkeeper as well as a batter. Jordan Cox, who has only a handful of one-day internationals behind him, is expected to take the gloves.

The rest of the top order is settled. Harry Brook leads the side, and Tom Banton and Ben Duckett gave England a start at Headingley with 73 and 67 respectively before the chase stalled.

England were eventually held to 305 for 9, a total that would have won most games at the ground and did not win this one.

Sri Lanka arrive with the momentum

The visitors have found a batter in form at the right moment. Captain Kusal Mendis made 121 from 100 balls at Headingley, hitting 14 fours and three sixes, and carried Sri Lanka to 321 for 6.

Their spin then held the chase together. Dunith Wellalage took 3-49 from his ten overs, removing England's openers and then Brook in the passage that decided the match.

"We have to focus on the next game and do the basics right," Mendis said after the win, turning attention to the Oval.

What Sunday settles

England's win at Chester-le-Street was built on Will Jacks, whose 5-22 was a maiden five-wicket haul in one-day internationals and dismantled Sri Lanka for 176 in defence of 265.

That match and the one at Headingley pulled in opposite directions, leaving a series neither side has controlled for long.

Sunday is the last fixture of Sri Lanka's tour, and the only one left that can decide anything.

England and Sri Lanka meet at the Kennington Oval on Sunday with the three-match one-day series level at 1-1.
