Sophie Molineux Set for Return but Bowling Role Uncertain Ahead of T20 World Cup

Australia’s new captain Sophie Molineux is poised to return to international action against the West Indies women's cricket team, although her full all-round role remains uncertain as selectors prioritise her fitness ahead of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup later this year.

Molineux, 28, recently succeeded Alyssa Healy as captain following Healy’s retirement from the format, and is expected to feature in all three T20 internationals in St Vincent. However, team management have indicated she may be used as a batter only as she continues her recovery from a lower-back injury.

The cautious approach reflects both her injury history and Australia’s desire to have their new leader fully fit for the World Cup, now just three months away. Molineux said her role would be assessed throughout the tour, particularly ahead of the ODI leg in St Kitts.

“It’s a see how we go situation,” she said, expressing excitement about returning to the side after missing recent matches, including Healy’s farewell Test. Despite the uncertainty around her bowling, Molineux remains central to Australia’s plans as they transition into a new era under her leadership.

Australia view the West Indies series as a key step in their preparation, with limited matches remaining before the global tournament. The squad will also play warm-up fixtures against South Africa to fine-tune combinations.

If Molineux is unable to play a full role in the ODIs, senior players such as Tahlia McGrath and Ashleigh Gardner are expected to take on greater responsibility.
