Bangladesh Minister to Consult ICC Over BCB Future Amid Governance Dispute

Bangladesh sports minister Aminul Haque has confirmed he will consult the International Cricket Council before making any final decision on the future of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), as tensions escalate over allegations of interference and irregularities.

The move follows the formation of a five-member investigation committee by the sports ministry on March 11 to probe claims of manipulation and abuse of power during last year’s BCB elections. The board has strongly objected, warning that such actions could amount to government interference—an issue that could attract ICC sanctions.

Haque said he would wait for the committee’s findings, expected within 15 working days, before holding discussions with the ICC. “My next step will come after I have spoken to the ICC,” he stated, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.

The controversy stems from widespread allegations, including those raised by former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, who withdrew from the election citing concerns over fairness. Accusations include election engineering, last-minute changes to councillor nominations, and undue influence by board leadership.

In parallel, the minister plans to establish a second inquiry into Bangladesh’s absence from this year’s ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Bangladesh withdrew from the tournament in India and Sri Lanka citing security concerns after prolonged negotiations, leading to their replacement by Scotland.

Haque emphasised the need to understand why the situation escalated to that point, pointing to shortcomings in sports diplomacy. “We must ensure such a mistake is not repeated,” he said.

The dual investigations signal a critical moment for Bangladesh cricket governance. With the ICC’s strict stance on political interference, the outcome of these consultations and inquiries could have significant implications for the board’s autonomy and the country’s standing in international cricket.
