Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey has admitted to feeling both mental and physical fatigue after a demanding summer but remains driven to help South Australia cricket team defend their Sheffield Shield title against Victoria cricket team next week.
Carey played a crucial role in Australia’s 4-1 Ashes triumph and has since maintained a relentless schedule, featuring in the Big Bash League with the Adelaide Strikers and continuing through South Australia’s domestic campaign. Unlike several of his international teammates, he has not taken a break, contributing significantly in the latter stages of the Shield season to guide his side into a second consecutive final.
Reflecting on his workload, Carey acknowledged the toll of the Ashes series. “It takes a lot out of you physically, but more so mentally,” he said, while also admitting he is looking forward to a break after the final. With no overseas franchise commitments scheduled in the coming months, Carey plans to recharge ahead of Australia’s upcoming white-ball tours.
Despite the fatigue, the 34-year-old remains highly motivated. He emphasized the refreshing nature of returning to state cricket, reconnecting with teammates and focusing on a shared goal. “You come back into a group with new faces and familiar ones, and you’re pushing for a Shield final—it gives you a lot of energy,” he said.
Looking ahead, Carey also relishes the challenge of facing Australian teammate Scott Boland, who has been in strong form. He believes South Australia handled him well in their recent drawn encounter and is confident heading into the final.
While there have been discussions about his T20 future, Carey remains focused on red-ball and ODI cricket, prioritizing rest and long-term performance over additional franchise opportunities.
