Tensions have escalated between Usman Khawaja and Queensland Cricket ahead of next week’s Sheffield Shield final, though the veteran batter is expected to be named in an extended squad on Friday. A final decision on his participation will be made closer to the match, which begins next Wednesday.

Dispute Over Shield Absence

Khawaja, 38, and Queensland Cricket are at odds over his decision to sit out the final regular-season Shield match against South Australia, which Queensland drew to secure their place in the final. While the match was underway in Adelaide, Khawaja attended all five days of the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, raising questions about his availability.

On Tuesday, he addressed the issue on social media, stating that he was rehabbing a hamstring niggle sustained during his match-winning 127 and 33 not out against Tasmania. Reports also suggest he has been managing an ankle issue from the Sri Lanka tour, though it did not prevent him from playing against Tasmania.

However, Queensland Cricket general manager Joe Dawes challenged that explanation, insisting that team medical staff had cleared Khawaja for selection in the South Australia match.

"As far as we are concerned, no hamstring issues," Dawes said on Wednesday. "I go off our medical staff, and there was no reason why he could not have played. It’s disappointing he didn’t take the opportunity to play for Queensland."

"He has communicated his reasons publicly. Hopefully, he makes himself available next week, and we will make that decision on Friday."

Khawaja was not the only high-profile player to miss the final Shield round. Nathan Lyon also attended the Formula One Grand Prix and has been managing a hip issue. Steven Smith skipped New South Wales' last match after returning from the Champions Trophy, while Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey did play for their respective states.

Additionally, all Cricket Australia and state-contracted players heading to the IPL were granted No-Objection Certificates to travel to India ahead of the tournament, which begins on Saturday.

Khawaja’s Workload and Career Management

Khawaja has played 11 first-class matches this summer, including seven Tests, making his workload heavier than that of any domestic red-ball-only batter in Australia. At 38, he has been strategically managing his schedule, prioritizing mental and physical freshness to extend his Test career.

Cricket Australia has backed this approach, allowing him to rest at key moments. He previously missed a Shield game to prepare for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and another following his career-best 232 not out in Sri Lanka.

However, with no international commitments until June, Khawaja is set to have April and May to rest before Australia’s World Test Championship final and a three-Test Caribbean tour. His next major assignment would then be the Ashes, starting in late November.
