KL Rahul may have produced one of the finest knocks of IPL 2026, but according to Ambati Rayudu, the bigger conversation around him continues to be about mindset rather than ability.
Rahul’s 92 off 52 balls against Gujarat Titans nearly pulled off a remarkable chase for Delhi Capitals, falling just one run short. It was an innings that showcased both control and acceleration, traits Rayudu believes Rahul has always possessed.
“We all know that once he gets in, he can hit a boundary off any delivery,” Rayudu said. “That has been his strength over the years. The challenge is the strategy he comes out with.”
Rahul began cautiously, reaching 20 off 17 balls, before shifting gears dramatically. His acceleration included a stunning over against Prasidh Krishna, where he struck a sequence of boundaries to bring up his fifty in just 29 balls.
Rayudu suggested that Rahul’s role in the Delhi setup may require him to bat deep, anchoring the innings while allowing others to play around him. On this occasion, Rahul executed that plan well, taking the chase deep into the final over.
However, the lack of support from the other end proved costly. Despite his efforts, Delhi fell agonisingly short in a tense finish, leaving Rahul’s innings as a heroic but incomplete effort.
Rayudu emphasised that Rahul’s biggest hurdle has never been technique or shot-making, but decision-making. Knowing when to attack, when to consolidate, and how to pace the innings remains central to his evolution as a T20 batter.
With Delhi Capitals showing promise early in the season, Rahul’s form could be crucial. If he consistently aligns his strategy with his natural ability, performances like this could soon translate into match-winning results.
