Rain denies PBKS win as KKR survive early collapse

Kolkata Knight Riders finally opened their account in IPL 2026, but only with a solitary point after their clash against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens was abandoned due to heavy rain.
The game had barely begun to take shape when weather intervened, with KKR struggling at 25 for 2 in 3.4 overs while chasing momentum after two consecutive defeats. Xavier Bartlett was the standout performer in the brief action, producing a fiery new-ball spell that left KKR in early trouble.
After Arshdeep Singh set the tone with a probing opening over, Bartlett took control with sharp outswing. He first dismissed Finn Allen, who edged behind after being beaten multiple times. Just moments later, he removed Cameron Green, leaving KKR reeling at 16 for 2.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane was left watching from the non-striker’s end as wickets fell in quick succession, continuing the team’s batting struggles this season.
Rain had been looming throughout the evening, and a drizzle during the fourth over soon intensified into a downpour. Players were forced off the field at 7:48 pm, and despite a brief improvement in conditions later in the night, the outfield remained too wet for play to resume.
Efforts to restart the match, even as a shortened contest, were abandoned due to waterlogged areas near the boundary.
For PBKS, the washout was a missed opportunity to secure another win after a strong start to the season, though they moved to the top of the table with five points. KKR, meanwhile, will take little comfort from their first point, with concerns over their batting and team balance continuing to grow.
