Urvil Patel's maiden double hundred carries Gujarat to 534 for 8 against Kerala

Urvil Patel turned his overnight 63 into an unbeaten 210 in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, the first double hundred of his first-class career

The Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter was still at the crease on the second afternoon of the Elite Group C match against Kerala, by which point his side had reached 534 for 8 from 144 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Patel needed only 91 balls for his hundred and had made 210 from 227 deliveries, an innings of 17 fours and six sixes.

Gujarat, captained by Chintan Gaja, chose to bat after winning the toss and closed the opening day on 300 for 5. Kerala were still waiting to begin their first innings.

Overnight 63 becomes a maiden double

Patel resumed on 63 not out, with Gujarat five down and the innings still short of a commanding total.

He reached three figures in the 92nd over, taking two sixes and a four from the first five balls of an over from the Kerala left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate.

The hundred came at a strike rate above a run a ball, and he had doubled it before Gujarat were eight down.

Aarya Desai falls five short

The innings was built first by Aarya Desai, who made 95 on the opening day before edging Vaishakh Chandran through to the wicketkeeper Vishnu Vinod.

Abhishek Desai made 42 and Manan Hingrajia 33, while Vedant Trivedi went for 9 and Jaymeet Patel for 1.

That left Gujarat 189 for 5, with Kerala having taken their five wickets through five different bowlers.

The sixth-wicket stand that turned the match

Patel then found a partner in Vishal Jayswal, and the pair put on an unbroken 111 for the sixth wicket to carry Gujarat from 189 for 5 to 300 for 5 by stumps on the first day.

Jayswal, 50 not out overnight, went on to 77 before he fell on the second day.

Gujarat passed 500 with two wickets in hand, Patel having batted through the collapse of the middle order and the arrival of the tail.

Little for Kerala to show across two days

Kerala shared their wickets around on the opening day, Nedumankuzhy Basil, Sarwate, Jalaj Saxena, MD Nidheesh and Chandran each striking once.

Basil and Sarwate each finished with two as the innings ran into a second day, and no bowler held the scoring rate down for long once Patel was set.

Rohan Kunnummal came into the Kerala side for Abhishek J Nair for this round.

Two of the four days had gone by the time Gujarat passed 500, and Kerala had still not batted.

A white-ball hitter makes a red-ball case

Patel is far better known for the speed of his scoring in the shorter formats. He holds the record for the fastest century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, made against Tripura in November 2024, and has reached a List A hundred in 41 balls, the second fastest by an Indian batter.

In the IPL he has made 197 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate above 200, and holds a share of the competition record for its fastest fifty, from 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants.

Born in Mehsana, he has played for Gujarat since 2018, after a single season with Baroda.

The 28-year-old is on the Chennai Super Kings list, and the IPL 2027 retention deadline falls on 17 November.

A first double hundred in first-class cricket, made at better than four an over, adds a format to a record that had been built almost entirely on white-ball striking.

Scorecard: Gujarat 534 for 8 from 144 overs (Urvil Patel 210*, Aarya Desai 95, Vishal Jayswal 77) v Kerala, second day, Narendra Modi Stadium
