PSL 2025 Set to Resume Amid Uncertainty Over Overseas Players and Scheduling Conflicts

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 is expected to resume later this week, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) working toward concluding the tournament’s final eight matches on home soil. The league was suspended due to escalating cross-border tensions with India, and the resumption efforts have been marked by a flurry of logistical and player availability challenges.

Following a series of discussions with franchises on Monday, the PCB is aiming to restart the league quickly, but one of the major obstacles is the uncertain return of overseas players. Several foreign cricketers are understood to be reluctant to return under the current circumstances, which may lead to a disparity in squad strengths. While some franchises remain hopeful about welcoming their foreign contingent back, others face significant gaps in their line-ups.

To address the imbalance, the PCB is considering organizing a replacement draft, although the quality of players available is limited. Many top-tier international players are already engaged in the IPL, which is also set to resume this week, further narrowing the talent pool. Broadcast logistics also present a complication, as production contracts are set to expire on May 18, which was initially scheduled to be the date of the PSL final before the tournament’s suspension.

The suspension itself was the result of a rapidly evolving situation. In the span of 24 hours, the PCB considered three different options for hosting the remainder of the tournament. Initially, there was a plan to shift the games to Karachi after security concerns made Rawalpindi unviable. Then, a move to the UAE was briefly announced. But with the IPL also being suspended around the same time, the PSL was indefinitely postponed on the advice of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Amid these changes, emotions ran high. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met with overseas players, who reportedly expressed that they were “in no frame of mind” to continue. That evening, the board arranged for the evacuation of foreign players to the UAE via military airbase, a decision that underscored the seriousness of the situation.

The resumption of PSL 2025 is significant beyond just the completion of the season—it also marks the end of the ten-year lease agreements for the six franchises. These contracts are now due for renewal, with current owners holding first right of refusal. There’s growing interest among owners to purchase the teams outright rather than operate under extended lease models, a move that could reshape the financial structure of the league going forward.

However, the revised PSL window is expected to clash with Bangladesh’s scheduled tour of Pakistan, which is set to begin on May 21. The tour includes five T20Is, with the first two games planned for Faisalabad and the remaining three in Lahore, starting from May 25. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has acknowledged the uncertainty and is currently engaged in active discussions with the PCB regarding the tour’s viability.

With time running short and multiple moving parts—including international scheduling conflicts, player availability, and broadcasting obligations—the next few days will be crucial in determining whether the PSL can conclude its 2025 season smoothly or face further disruptions.
