Cricket Malawi Operations Director Arjun Menon Dies at 48; Police Investigate Circumstances

Arjun Menon, the operations director of Cricket Malawi and a widely respected figure in global cricket development, has died at the age of 48. His death occurred on Sunday in Blantyre, Malawi's financial and commercial capital, and local police are investigating the circumstances surrounding it.

Menon, originally from Singapore, had a broad and impactful career in cricket as both a player and coach. He represented Singapore as a cricketer and later served in coaching roles with several national teams, including Chile, Botswana, Indonesia, and Singapore, before taking up his position in Malawi in 2020.

The news has deeply shaken Malawi’s cricket and sporting community. Vivek Ganesan, president of Cricket Malawi, expressed profound grief over the loss. “As Cricket Malawi, we are devastated by this loss because Arjun did so much for our transformative agenda,” he said. “All the successes we have so far are attributed to him. This is a very painful loss.”

Dr. Henry Kamata, CEO of the Malawi National Council of Sports, also paid tribute, highlighting Menon’s instrumental role in elevating cricket in the country. “Arjun was a dedicated coach and a passionate advocate for the development of cricket in Malawi,” Kamata said in a statement. “His commitment, professionalism, and vision were truly inspirational, and his loss is a devastating blow to the sporting fraternity in Malawi and beyond.”

Under Menon’s leadership, Malawi's men's cricket team reached new competitive heights, finishing as runners-up to Tanzania in Group A of the T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier in September 2024. Meanwhile, the Under-19 women’s team made significant strides, topping Division 2 in the 2025 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, which secured them promotion to Division 1, where they ultimately finished seventh.

Arjun Menon’s sudden passing leaves behind a legacy of transformation, growth, and global outreach in Associate cricket. His work extended far beyond the boundary ropes, and he will be remembered as a tireless advocate for the game’s development in emerging cricket nations.
