Ponting Confident PBKS Have “No Gaps” Ahead of IPL 2026

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting believes his side enters IPL 2026 stronger than ever, insisting the squad now has the depth and balance needed to go one step further after last season’s near-miss.
PBKS topped the league stage in 2025 with 19 points but fell short of lifting their maiden title. Heading into the new season, Ponting expressed confidence that the team has addressed any shortcomings. “I don’t think there are too many gaps now,” he said, highlighting improved squad depth and the presence of backup options across all roles.
A key addition is Australian allrounder Cooper Connolly, who is expected to bat at No. 3. Ponting emphasized that Connolly’s inclusion enhances flexibility in the batting order, particularly with left-right combinations, while also providing cover in both top and middle-order positions.
The coach also pointed out that PBKS now have multiple options to replace key contributions from last season, including those of Josh Inglis. Players like Suryansh Shedge, along with overseas recruits such as Connolly and Mitchell Owen, offer versatility depending on pitch conditions and match situations.
Ponting underlined that despite last year’s success, the team must start afresh. “It’s nil-nil now,” he said, stressing the importance of a strong start and consistent performances throughout the tournament.
He also addressed the evolving nature of T20 cricket, noting how batting-friendly conditions have increased pressure on bowlers. Ponting called for smarter strategies, including variations in pace, angles, and the use of yorkers and bouncers, to counter increasingly aggressive batters.
With a settled core, enhanced flexibility, and a deeper squad, PBKS appear well-positioned for another strong campaign. Ponting’s message is clear: expectations are high, and the goal is nothing short of winning their first IPL title.
