Nottinghamshire praise 'outstanding' O'Neill as successful spell concludes

Nottinghamshire have bid a warm farewell to Australian quick Fergus O'Neill, whose short but highly productive four-match stint has come to an end. O'Neill departs as the leading wicket-taker in the country during his stay.

The Victoria fast bowler signed off with figures of 3 for 74 in Sussex’s second innings, taking his season tally to 21 wickets and helping Nottinghamshire seal a nine-wicket victory that lifted them to the top of the first division. His standout performance came in the previous round, when he claimed a career-best 5 for 19 against Warwickshire.

"Fergie’s been outstanding, I can't speak highly enough of him," Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed said.
"For a 24-year-old, making his first overseas appearance, to perform the way he has is exceptional. He quickly became a leader in the group — you only had to watch him field yesterday, besides bowling 20-odd overs, to see the size of his heart."

O'Neill's time with Nottinghamshire was limited by his short-term visa, restricting his stay to just four rounds. However, the club is hopeful of a future reunion. "Hopefully, we can create more memories together down the line," Hameed added.

His excellent form for Nottinghamshire followed a strong Sheffield Shield season, where he was named Player of the Year after taking 38 wickets at an average of 21.07. He also impressed for Australia A earlier in the season, picking up five wickets in Mackay.

O'Neill now boasts 133 first-class wickets at an average of 20.03. He also showcased his batting skills during his stint, scoring a half-century against Warwickshire.
