New Zealand climbed to the top of the T20I tri-series points table with a commanding victory over hosts Zimbabwe in Harare, securing back-to-back wins after their earlier triumph over South Africa. In a dominant all-round display, New Zealand’s bowling unit restricted Zimbabwe to a modest 120—the lowest first-innings score of the tournament so far—before their batters chased the target down with ease, reaching the total inside 14 overs and boosting their net run rate to an impressive 1.919.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, remain winless in the series and are now on the brink of elimination. With no points from their first two games, they must win both of their remaining matches—against South Africa and New Zealand—to have any chance of reaching the final. Despite adopting a more attacking approach—registering a higher percentage of aggressive shots than in their opening match—Zimbabwe failed to convert intent into runs. Their innings lacked meaningful partnerships, with the highest stand being 37 for the first wicket between Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett. Madhevere top-scored with a spirited 36, his highest T20I score in over a year, before being bowled by Adam Milne. However, a middle-order collapse saw Zimbabwe lose 5 wickets for just 37 runs, derailing any hopes of setting a challenging total.

New Zealand’s bowlers were clinical, with Matt Henry once again leading the attack by claiming 3 for 26. He was well supported by spinners Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, and Rachin Ravindra, who each picked up a wicket and conceded just 43 runs across their combined nine overs.

In reply, New Zealand recovered from the early loss of Tim Seifert to coast to victory. Zimbabwe's bowling attack failed to exert sustained pressure. While Blessing Muzarabani claimed the lone wicket and kept things tight early on, dropped catches and a lack of support from the rest of the attack cost Zimbabwe dearly. Their decision to omit spinner Wellington Masakadza in favour of an extra seamer, Tinotenda Maposa, is also likely to be scrutinized.

With this emphatic win, New Zealand look well-positioned to book a place in the tri-series final, while Zimbabwe face an uphill battle to stay alive in their home tournament.
