Glenn Phillips Ruled Out of Zimbabwe Tour With Groin Injury; Replacement for Test Series Yet to Be Named

New Zealand allrounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, which also features South Africa, as well as the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, due to a groin injury. Phillips sustained the injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) final on July 13 while playing for Washington Freedom. After arriving in Zimbabwe and undergoing medical evaluation, it was determined he would need several weeks to recover, according to a statement from New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

Tim Robinson, who was initially brought in as short-term cover for players involved in the MLC playoffs, will now remain with the T20I squad for the remainder of the tri-series. A replacement for Phillips in the Test squad will be announced at a later date.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment at losing Phillips, stating, “It’s a tough blow for Glenn and the team. Like Finn Allen, we know how eager he was to contribute to this tour. We’re confident he’ll put in the work needed to return fully fit.”

Alongside Phillips, fellow allrounder Jimmy Neesham and wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay—both also originally drafted in as cover—will return home to New Zealand. Phillips now joins a growing injury list that includes Ben Sears (side strain) and Finn Allen (foot injury), both of whom are also unavailable.

However, the team received some positive news with the return of left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who is set to join the squad for the Test series after recovering from a knee injury. Patel proved his readiness with strong performances for Central Districts in the Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana.

New Zealand made a strong start to the tri-series, defeating South Africa by 21 runs in their opening match in Harare, despite the absence of several key players.
