Matthew Hayden on MS Dhoni: “It’s Over for Him

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden sparked controversy after stating that MS Dhoni's cricketing career is "over" and that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend should consider joining commentary. His comments came after CSK’s 25-run defeat to Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 match held on Saturday.

Dhoni, who came in to bat at a precarious 74/5 while chasing 184, managed an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls. Despite his efforts, CSK registered their third loss in four games this season. This performance, coupled with the presence of Dhoni’s family at the Madras Cricket Club enclosure, has reignited retirement rumors.

“MS should join us in our commentary box after this game. He has lost the cricket... It’s over for him,” Hayden remarked during live commentary.

So far in IPL 2025, Dhoni has scored just 76 runs in four innings, with his highest being 30*. Criticism has also emerged about Dhoni batting as low as No. 9, even behind Ravichandran Ashwin in some games.

When questioned, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming backed Dhoni, explaining his lower-order role:  
“His knees aren’t what they used to be… He’ll gauge what he can give us on the day,” Fleming said.

As fans speculate about Dhoni’s future, one thing is clear—his legacy continues to stir passionate debates both on and off the field.
