Vettori Urges SRH to Respect Conditions Amid Losing Streak

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori remains committed to his top order’s aggressive approach despite another underwhelming batting performance in their loss to Gujarat Titans (GT). However, he acknowledged that the batters must better assess match conditions and adapt to well-prepared opposition bowling attacks.

“We believe in our aggressive style, but we need to respect the conditions more and assess situations better—something we’ve fallen short on,” Vettori said after SRH’s fourth consecutive defeat in IPL 2025. “Other teams are clearly putting a lot of planning into our top three, and we haven’t always responded effectively.”

SRH struggled again at home, posting just 152 for 8, which GT chased down comfortably in 16.4 overs to win by seven wickets.

Vettori noted that the pitch wasn’t typical of Hyderabad, describing it as slow and tough for batting. The team had aimed for a 160–170 total but fell around 20 runs short, with the pitch playing easier under lights.

“We thought 160–170 was par, and we were close. Twenty more runs could’ve made a big difference. GT read the conditions very well,” he said.

Despite their early season fireworks—scoring 286 against Rajasthan Royals—SRH’s campaign has derailed since. Vettori stressed the need for a turnaround ahead of their next match against Punjab Kings on April 12.

“We’re not panicking—Pat [Cummins] doesn’t panic, and neither do I—but we’re aware of the consequences of four straight losses,” he said. “Expectations were high after last year’s strong finish and the big opening win, but we’ve been far from our best across all departments.”

Fielding, in particular, has been a letdown, which Vettori called a key indicator of a team’s overall form. He emphasized that SRH must improve in batting, bowling, and fielding to regain momentum.

“We haven’t clicked in any game. Last year, we scored big and held on with the ball, but we haven’t replicated that. The positive is that IPL offers quick chances to bounce back, and there’s still confidence within the group—it just needs to come together now.”
