MacDonald-Gay’s Record-Breaking Six-Fer Powers Surrey to Dramatic Win Over Durham

Surrey Women survived a tense low-scoring contest against Durham Women thanks to a sensational spell from Ryana MacDonald-Gay, whose record-breaking figures sealed a thrilling two-wicket victory at the Kia Oval.

Returning for only her third match after recovering from a spinal lumbar injury, MacDonald-Gay produced one of the greatest spells seen in women’s domestic T20 cricket, finishing with astonishing figures of 6 for 11 as Durham were bowled out for 102.

The Surrey quick repeatedly threatened a hat-trick during a devastating spell that ripped through Durham’s middle and lower order. After Durham had reached a steady 37 for 1, the match turned dramatically following a sharp run-out by Alice Monaghan. MacDonald-Gay then dismantled the innings with relentless accuracy and movement.

Bess Heath top-scored for Durham with 28 and briefly resisted with some attacking strokes, but Surrey’s bowlers kept striking regularly. Debutant Bethan Miles also impressed with 2 for 10 to help finish off the innings.

Despite the modest target, Surrey’s chase quickly turned into a nerve-racking affair. Durham fought back brilliantly through Heather Graham and Trudy Johnson, reducing Surrey to 68 for 6 and creating genuine hopes of an unlikely defence.

Alice Davidson-Richards and captain Bryony Smith both fell cheaply, while the pressure continued to build as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

But Monaghan once again played a decisive role, remaining calm amid the collapse to finish unbeaten on 20 and guide Surrey home with 20 balls still remaining.

Speaking after the match, MacDonald-Gay admitted the performance exceeded even her own expectations following months of rehabilitation.

The spell not only secured an important victory for Surrey but also marked a major personal milestone for the fast bowler, whose return from injury could prove a huge boost for both club and country moving forward.
