Padikkal's 199 lifts India A from 113 to 516 but New Zealand A survive in Lincoln
Devdutt Padikkal's 199 turned a first-innings collapse into a winning position, but New Zealand A's last pair survived fading light to draw the opening unofficial Test in Lincoln
India A were bowled out for 113 on the first day at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval and still finished the match one wicket from victory, New Zealand A closing on 187 for 9 after the umpires took the players off for bad light with 18 overs of the final day still to be bowled.
The recovery was built on Padikkal's 199 from 248 balls, the centrepiece of a second innings of 516 that set the hosts 313 to win.
India A scored 403 more runs in their second innings than their first, and still could not force the result the turnaround deserved.
New Zealand A lost their top three for 13 and were four down before the chase had properly begun. Curtis Heaphy held the innings together with an unbeaten 90 and, with Jayden Lennox, saw out the last 57 deliveries.
Keene takes five as India A fold
Sent in after New Zealand A won the toss and bowled, India A lasted 39.3 overs. Simon Keene took 5-24 and Zak Gibson 3-29 as the innings came apart inside two sessions.
Yash Rathod was the only batter to go past 35, finishing unbeaten on 44 from 49 balls. Padikkal made 32 from 77 at the top of the order.
Mariu and Foxcroft stretch the lead
New Zealand A replied with 317 in 89.3 overs. Rhys Mariu made 76 from 137 balls and Dean Foxcroft 51 from 79, with Heaphy contributing 44 from 134.
Anshul Kamboj took 3-52 and Auqib Nabi 3-69. A lead of 204 in a four-day match left India A with little margin.
Mariu, Foxcroft and Heaphy all passed 40, and the rest of the order added enough to put the match beyond India A's first-innings total twice over.
Padikkal falls one short of a double
Padikkal's 199 came from 248 balls and contained 24 fours and three sixes. He was dismissed one run short of a double century.
Sai Sudharsan made 91 from 184 balls, Rathod 66 from 72 and Washington Sundar 52 from 80 as India A reached 516 in 123.1 overs. Gibson finished with 3-80.
Sundar and Akash Deep resumed on the fourth morning and the last two wickets fell inside the first half-hour, leaving New Zealand A 313 to win in what remained of the final day.
Nabi leaves the chase at 13 for 3
Nabi removed Mariu, Tim Robinson and Matthew Boyle in an opening burst that left the chase at 13 for 3.
Heaphy and Foxcroft answered with a stand of 78 before Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Foxcroft for 42, and New Zealand A were 91 for 4.
Kamboj, Akash Deep and Sundar took a wicket apiece as the innings was pulled back, and Padikkal's off-breaks accounted for Fraser Sheat and Gibson.
Heaphy and Lennox hold out
Akash Deep removed Keene to bring the last pair together with the better part of a session left.
Heaphy, at the crease from the fall of the third wicket, finished 90 not out from 187 balls, and Lennox took his share of the final 57 deliveries without being separated.
The umpires then judged the light unfit with 18 overs unbowled, and New Zealand A had survived 65 overs for their nine wickets.
Nabi ended with 3-28 and six wickets in the match.
Scorecard: India A 113 (Yash Rathod 44*, Simon Keene 5-24) and 516 (Devdutt Padikkal 199, Sai Sudharsan 91; Zak Gibson 3-80) drew with New Zealand A 317 (Rhys Mariu 76, Dean Foxcroft 51; Anshul Kamboj 3-52, Auqib Nabi 3-69) and 187 for 9 (Curtis Heaphy 90*; Auqib Nabi 3-28).
