Kaushal Silva Named Hong Kong Head Coach Ahead of Asia Cup

Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Kaushal Silva has been appointed as the head coach of the Hong Kong men’s national team ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. The announcement marks a significant step in Silva’s post-playing career, as he takes on his first international head coaching role.

At 39, Silva brings a wealth of experience to the position. He represented Sri Lanka in 39 Tests between 2011 and 2018, scoring over 1,800 runs, including three centuries. In domestic cricket, Silva was a prolific performer, amassing more than 13,900 runs in 209 first-class matches, including 41 centuries. His technical skill and consistency made him a mainstay in Sri Lanka’s red-ball setup for much of the 2010s.

Since retiring from international cricket, Silva has been involved in coaching across Sri Lanka, England, and Australia. Most recently, he worked with the Superkings Cricket Academy, where he focused on youth development and high-performance training.

Now stepping into his role with Hong Kong, Silva replaces Simon Willis and takes over a side looking to rebuild after a disappointing campaign at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy, where they suffered a heavy defeat to Malaysia in the final. Cricket Hong Kong officials expressed confidence that Silva’s experience and leadership would bring fresh energy to the squad and help foster long-term development within the country’s cricketing structure.

In his first remarks as coach, Silva emphasized professionalism, discipline, and a growth mindset. He also stressed the importance of developing local talent and preparing players for the demands of high-pressure tournaments.

Hong Kong has been placed in Group B for the Asia Cup, alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Their campaign begins on September 9, and Silva’s appointment is seen as a timely boost ahead of what promises to be a challenging but opportunity-filled tournament.

The Asia Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, and Hong Kong will be looking to make a strong impression under their new coach’s guidance.
