“Just Keeping It Warm”: Maxwell Expects Short Stint as Opener Before Head Returns

Glenn Maxwell has downplayed the likelihood of holding onto Australia’s opening spot for long, humorously stating that he’s merely “warming Travis Head’s seat.” After being promoted to the top of the order in Australia’s recent T20 matches, Maxwell admitted the role isn’t a permanent shift but more a stopgap while Head recovers or rests.

The explosive all-rounder, known more for his middle-order fireworks, opened the innings in the absence of regular opener Head and showed his usual flair. However, Maxwell was quick to acknowledge that the position belongs to Head, who has cemented himself as a key figure in Australia’s T20 setup alongside David Warner.

“I think we all know I’m just keeping it warm until Heady’s back,” Maxwell said with a smile. “It’s not something I expect to continue long-term, but I’m happy to slot in wherever the team needs me.”

Maxwell’s versatility has long been one of his greatest assets. Over the years, he has batted in nearly every position from opener to finisher and occasionally chipped in with handy off-spin. That adaptability makes him a valuable asset in any format, especially in T20 cricket, where roles can shift rapidly due to matchups, injuries, or conditions.

Despite his modesty, Maxwell’s recent success as an opener has added an interesting dynamic to Australia’s T20 strategy. With a T20 World Cup on the horizon, the selectors might be tempted to keep him as a flexible option up top should the situation demand it.

For now, though, Maxwell is simply enjoying the temporary role—and doing what he does best: entertaining crowds, scoring quickly, and giving Australia that unpredictable edge. Once Head returns, Maxwell says he’ll gladly move back down the order, where he’s equally capable of changing the course of a game in just a few overs.

“It’s about what the team needs, not what I want,” Maxwell added. “If that means moving around the order every game, so be it. I’ll be ready.”
