Moeen Ali Backs IPL's Potential Two-Year Ban on Harry Brook

Former England allrounder Moeen Ali believes that the potential two-year IPL ban for Harry Brook, following his withdrawal from the tournament for a second consecutive year, is justified and "not harsh."

Under the IPL's new regulations, Brook is ineligible to participate in the league or its auction until 2027 unless his withdrawal is due to an injury or medical condition confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Brook cited the need for rest after an intense playing schedule as his reason for pulling out of IPL 2025.

Speaking on the Beard Before Cricket podcast, Moeen supported the IPL's stance:

"It's not [harsh] though, I kinda agree with it. A lot of people do that [withdraw] and then come back and end up getting a better financial package. It kinda messes up things for the teams too. Delhi Capitals have had to rejig everything after Brook pulled out. If you withdraw without a valid reason like injury or family issues, a ban makes sense."

Delhi Capitals had signed Brook for INR 6.25 crore (£590,000 approx.) at the IPL mega auction, only to be informed of his withdrawal earlier this month. Last season, Brook also pulled out of the IPL due to a family bereavement.

Moeen suggested that Brook’s decision might be influenced by his potential future role as England’s white-ball captain, given Jos Buttler’s recent resignation. With a packed schedule ahead, including a home Test series against India and the Ashes in Australia, Brook may have opted to prioritize his international commitments.

England legspinner Adil Rashid echoed Moeen’s sentiments, emphasizing that players are aware of the consequences when entering the IPL auction:

"If you put your name in, you know the rules. If you pull out, this is what happens. It’s been a problem for years with last-minute withdrawals affecting team dynamics, and that's what the IPL is trying to fix."

While Brook has not yet been officially sanctioned, the IPL’s stricter rules, shaped by franchise feedback, indicate that overseas players backing out at the last minute will face harsher repercussions moving forward.
