Aamer Jamal Fined Over Million Rupees for Displaying Slogan Supporting Imran Khan

Pakistan allrounder Aamer Jamal has been fined over a million rupees (approximately USD 4000) for displaying a slogan in support of former prime minister and cricket legend Imran Khan.

During a Pakistan training session in the Test series against England last December, Jamal was seen with "804" written on the underside of his floppy hat—a reference to Imran’s prisoner number since his incarceration in August 2023. The number has become a rallying symbol among Imran’s supporters and has been prominently used in political gatherings and even PSL matches.

Though Jamal’s action did not breach ICC regulations—since it occurred during training and not on a match day—the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) found it in violation of its own code of conduct. He was penalized under clause 2.23, which prohibits public criticism or inappropriate comments related to the PCB, ICC, officials, sponsors, or politically sensitive matters.

The hefty fine is seen as an example-setting measure rather than a routine disciplinary action. It also comes amid ongoing political tensions, with the PCB’s current chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, holding a key government role as interior minister. The board previously faced criticism for omitting Imran from a celebratory video highlighting Pakistan’s cricketing achievements, later reinstating his footage after backlash.

Jamal is among several players fined over the winter for various disciplinary and curfew violations.
