Hardik Pandya's move to Punjab Kings awaits final paperwork as Arshdeep Singh heads to Mumbai

Hardik Pandya is set to join Punjab Kings in a straight swap for Arshdeep Singh, with both franchises through the BCCI's trade process and only the exchange of contracts left

The trade that would take Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians to Punjab Kings in exchange for the left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has reached its final stage, with the two franchises having exchanged Expressions of Interest under the procedure the Board of Control for Cricket in India sets for player trades, Cricbuzz reported on Sunday.

Both players have given their consent, according to that report, and the deal had been held up only briefly while Pandya took time over his decision. An announcement is expected once contracts are exchanged, with the ongoing festival holidays in India one reason for the wait.

An IPL source told PTI a day earlier that the matter was already settled. "The trade has been completed. Hardik is going to Punjab Kings and Arshdeep is moving to Mumbai Indians. Hardik is happy to play under Shreyas Iyer," the source said. The swap still requires ratification by the BCCI before it is official, and no third player is involved.

What the trade rules require

The IPL's trade rules allow a move only once the paperwork is lodged centrally: "Only players whose names are included on an EOI Confirmation and for whom a signed Consent Form has been received by the BCCI may be traded."

Once the Expressions of Interest are exchanged, franchises are formally permitted to speak to the other team's player. Fees are then agreed and contracts swapped, although in practice both players will have been sounded out long before that point.

Why Mumbai wanted a new-ball bowler

Mumbai Indians have been looking for a front-line quick to share the new ball with Jasprit Bumrah, a need that sharpened after Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar had modest returns in the last season.

Arshdeep answers it directly. He is regarded as India's foremost new-ball and death-overs bowler behind Bumrah, and is the country's leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals.

A move without the armband

For Pandya the switch means giving up a leadership role he has held for five years, two in charge of Gujarat Titans and three at Mumbai Indians after he returned to the franchise in 2024 in place of Rohit Sharma.

That spell did not go to plan. The five-time champions missed the play-offs in two of the three seasons under him.

At Punjab Kings he arrives as a player only. Shreyas Iyer has been settled as captain for two seasons, a run that also brought him the India captaincy, and is expected to stay in the role.

What Punjab are giving up

Arshdeep's association with Punjab Kings runs long, and it was with the franchise that he built the reputation that carried him into the India side. The decision to let him go was described as the captain and coach's call rather than the owners'.

"For the owners, it was not an easy decision considering how Arshdeep has risen and performed so well for the franchise," the IPL source told PTI. "However, the captain and the coach went ahead with this decision, and that is it."

Punjab are still chasing a first title in 19 seasons, having reached the final twice, in 2014 and 2025. They were strong through the first half of the 2026 season before a second-half slide left them out of the play-offs.

The auction clock

The move also carries a question Punjab will have weighed. Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the last IPL season after a run of injuries, and his fitness remains the one uncertain part of what he brings.

The timing leaves room for the formalities. The BCCI has pushed the retention deadline back to November 17, and the mini-auction is set for Goa on December 16.

Both franchises therefore have nine days to close the trade and settle their retained lists before that deadline passes.

Confirmation now rests with the BCCI, which is expected to ratify the swap once the contracts are exchanged.
