Hodge's hundred and Wickham's 78 stretch the West Indies lead past 300 in Sylhet

West Indies turned a 30-run first-innings deficit into a lead of more than 300 on the fourth day in Sylhet, moving within sight of a 2-0 series sweep
Kavem Hodge made his third Test hundred and Kevin Wickham followed his debut half-century with 78 as West Indies batted Bangladesh out of the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Resuming the day on 7 for 0, the visitors had moved to 337 for 3 late on the fourth evening, a lead of 307 with a day's play still to come.
Bangladesh, who had led by 30 on the back of Towhid Hridoy's record-breaking unbeaten 242, took two wickets in the morning and none thereafter.
An opening stand that set the tone
Brandon King and Joshua Da Silva put on 81 for the first wicket, erasing the deficit inside the first hour of the day.
King made 61 off 84 balls with 10 fours and a six before Mehidy Hasan Miraz had him caught by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. He had been dropped by Hridoy on 56.
Da Silva fell for 36, given out lbw to Taijul Islam, and West Indies went to lunch on 128 for 2 with a lead of 98.
Bangladesh bowl a wicketless afternoon
The second session brought Bangladesh nothing. Shanto turned to all five of his bowlers and none of them broke the stand.
West Indies scored 131 runs in 29 overs at 4.50 an over to reach 259 for 2 at tea, 229 ahead.
Hodge had already survived the closest call of the day, given out caught off Mehidy on 16 before a review showed the ball had struck his pad on the way to short leg.
The pitch offered the bowlers little and changed little across the day. Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud all went without reward, and the two spinners who had struck in the morning could not repeat it until the evening.
Hodge reaches three figures
Hodge was 93 not out off 130 balls at tea, with 10 fours and a six, and brought up his century off 142 balls in the third session.
It was his third Test hundred, and the innings carried him past 1,000 runs in Test cricket.
He was still there at the end of the day's play, having batted through two sessions without offering a chance after the early review.
A rare debut for Wickham
Wickham, playing his first Test, made 61 in the first innings and followed it with 78 in the second before Taijul found a way through.
That made him the first West Indies batter in 48 years to pass fifty in both innings of a Test debut, a feat last managed by Sew Shivnarine against Australia in 1978.
His stand with Hodge was worth 165 for the third wicket and effectively settled the fourth day.
Where the series stands
West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0 after an eight-wicket win in the first Test at Mirpur, where captain Roston Chase took 5-36 in Bangladesh's second innings.
In Sylhet they batted first and made 356, Amir Jangoo's hundred the backbone of the innings and Hasan Mahmud returning 6-90 for the hosts.
Hridoy's 242 not out then lifted Bangladesh to 386 for 9 and a slender first-innings advantage, which has since been swept aside.
A result on the final day would give West Indies a series sweep away from home and a second set of World Test Championship points from the tour.
Bangladesh, who took nothing from the Mirpur Test, face a final day of batting out a deficit that has grown beyond 300, on a surface that has given their own bowlers almost nothing for two days.
Scorecard: West Indies 356 and 337 for 3 (Wickham 78, King 61) lead Bangladesh 386 for 9 (Hridoy 242 not out, Hasan Mahmud 6-90 in the first innings) by 307 runs, with Hodge unbeaten past his hundred and a day's play remaining.
