Handscomb to Miss 2026 County Season, Commits Future to Leicestershire

Australia batter Peter Handscomb will miss the entire 2026 County Championship season with Leicestershire due to personal reasons, though he has signed a one-year contract extension that will see him return as captain in 2027.
Handscomb, 34, played a key role in Leicestershire’s promotion to Division One last season, scoring 601 runs at an average of 40.06 across 11 matches. His leadership and consistency were central to the club’s successful campaign, which marked their return to the top tier for the first time since 2003.
Despite his absence this year, Handscomb will retain his role as club captain, with Leicestershire set to appoint an interim leader for the 2026 season. Allrounder Ian Holland, who stepped in during the latter stages of the previous campaign, is among the potential options.
Explaining his decision, Handscomb emphasized the importance of family commitments. “It’s difficult to miss the season, but family must take priority,” he said, expressing gratitude to the club for their understanding and support. He also reaffirmed his confidence in the squad’s ability to compete strongly in Division One.
Leicestershire’s director of cricket, Claude Henderson, backed the decision, describing Handscomb as an “exceptional leader” and confirming the club’s full support during his time away.
Handscomb is currently leading Victoria in the Sheffield Shield final in Australia, underlining his continued involvement at the domestic level despite stepping away from county cricket this year.
Leicestershire will begin their Division One campaign against Sussex at Grace Road, entering a challenging season without their captain on the field. However, with Handscomb committed for the future, the club retains long-term stability in leadership.
His return in 2027 is expected to provide a major boost as Leicestershire aim to establish themselves among England’s top counties.
