Pratika Rawal Fined and Penalised for Physical Contact During First ODI Against England

During the first One-Day International (ODI) between India and England on Tuesday, Indian opening batter Pratika Rawal was fined 10% of her match fee and handed a demerit point for committing a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct involving "avoidable physical contact." The match, which India won by four wickets, saw two separate incidents involving Rawal that drew the attention of the match officials.

The first occurred in the 18th over of India’s innings when Rawal, after playing a delivery from Lauren Filer, collided with the bowler while running a single. The second took place the following over when, after being dismissed by Sophie Ecclestone for a composed 36 off 51 balls, Rawal made shoulder contact with the bowler while returning to the pavilion.

Rawal accepted the charge, admitting guilt under the ICC's rules concerning deliberate or inappropriate physical contact during play. She later clarified the incidents were unintentional, stating: "The collision with Filer was accidental—I was just running my normal line. The shoulder contact with Ecclestone wasn’t deliberate either. I don’t believe it’s something to be overanalyzed or dramatized."

Despite the on-field controversy, Rawal played a significant role in laying the foundation for India’s successful chase of 259. She partnered with Smriti Mandhana for a 48-run opening stand and then added 46 runs with Harleen Deol for the second wicket. India’s innings was eventually anchored by a crucial unbroken 90-run partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues (48) and Deepti Sharma (62*), sealing the win with ten balls to spare.

In addition, the England team was penalised 5% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate, having fallen one over short of their target despite not bowling their full quota of 50 overs.

The two teams will face off again in the second ODI at Lord’s on Saturday, followed by the final match of the series in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday. India currently lead the ODI series 1–0 and had previously clinched the T20I series 3–2.
