Glenn Maxwell ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to finger injury

Punjab Kings (PBKS) allrounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out for the rest of IPL 2025 after suffering a fracture in his right-hand finger.

“It’s really unfortunate he’s picked up a fractured finger,” PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer said during the toss ahead of their clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday night. “We haven’t finalised a replacement yet, but we’re confident in our squad depth. We have several match-winners beyond the playing XI and will continue to back them.”

Marcus Stoinis also confirmed the extent of the injury, stating that Maxwell initially didn’t think it was serious. “He went for scans, and unfortunately, the results weren’t great,” Stoinis told the broadcaster before the match in Chennai. “It looks like Maxi’s tournament is over.”

Maxwell has had a below-par campaign with the bat, scoring just 48 runs in six innings, including four single-digit scores in his last four outings. However, he made contributions with the ball, claiming four wickets with his offspin. He was acquired for INR 4.2 crore during the last mega auction.

This marks PBKS’s second major injury setback this season, following the loss of pace bowler Lockie Ferguson to a serious injury earlier this month. The franchise has yet to name a replacement for him as well.

Head coach Ricky Ponting addressed the situation, saying the team would likely announce replacements soon. “We’ve got until our 12th game to make a call,” Ponting said. “We're looking at options within the squad too—players like Azmatullah Omarzai, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett—depending on conditions.”

Ponting also noted the challenges of finding quality replacements, particularly with the Pakistan Super League running concurrently. “We’re scouting Indian talent as well,” he added. “A couple of young players trained with us recently and will travel to Dharamsala. If they impress, they could earn a Punjab contract soon. We’ll make those decisions before our 12th game.”

PBKS currently sit second on the points table, behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), while CSK are the first team officially out of playoff contention.
