New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson believes teammate Ben Sears still has more pace to unlock, praising the youngster’s development after their strong showing against South Africa national cricket team.
The hosts bounced back impressively in the second T20I in Hamilton, posting 175 for 6 on a challenging surface before securing a convincing 68-run victory. Ferguson, who picked up three wickets, credited the team’s ability to adapt quickly to conditions after a disappointing outing in the series opener.
“We talk a lot about adapting,” Ferguson said. “It’s not always easy, but I thought 175 was an outstanding total on that wicket.” He also highlighted the contribution of Devon Conway, whose gritty half-century anchored the innings despite difficult batting conditions.
Ferguson’s return to the side marked a personal milestone after time away for family reasons following the birth of his first child. He expressed his joy at being back playing in familiar home conditions, describing it as a special experience in front of New Zealand crowds.
However, it was Sears’ performance that particularly stood out. The young quick matched Ferguson with three wickets and impressed with his pace and bounce. “He’s still got more pace in him,” Ferguson said, noting Sears’ dedication in training and continuous improvement over recent seasons.
Looking ahead to the third T20I at Eden Park, Ferguson acknowledged the unique challenges of the venue, including short boundaries and high-scoring tendencies. Despite that, he relishes playing there, calling it one of the highlights of the calendar.
With momentum now on their side, New Zealand will aim to continue their resurgence, with Ferguson confident their adaptability and bowling strength can keep South Africa under pressure in the remainder of the series.
