England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith believes missing out on the Indian Premier League could prove to be a “blessing in disguise” as he looks to rebuild his red-ball game ahead of a crucial Test summer.
Smith endured a difficult The Ashes tour in Australia, scoring 211 runs across five Tests with just one half-century. He also faced scrutiny for key mistakes, including a dropped catch off Travis Head and a rash dismissal against Marnus Labuschagne. England ultimately suffered a 4-1 series defeat.
Having gone unsold at the IPL auction and subsequently left out of England’s white-ball squads, Smith now has an uninterrupted window to focus on improving his technique with Surrey County Cricket Club ahead of their County Championship campaign.
“At the time, I would have liked to have gone,” Smith admitted, but added that the break has allowed him to address areas where he felt “out of kilter” during the latter part of the season. He is aiming to use a block of county matches to refine his red-ball skills before England’s home series against New Zealand.
Despite his struggles, Smith’s overall Test record remains solid, averaging over 40, and he showcased his potential with a remarkable 184 not out against India last year. Still, competition for his place is intensifying, with players like Jordan Cox and emerging talent James Rew pushing for selection.
Smith acknowledged the physical and mental toll of back-to-back Test series, describing them as valuable learning experiences. Now refreshed and back in familiar surroundings, he is determined to translate those lessons into consistent performances and cement his place in England’s Test side.
