CWI Blocks Seales’ Hampshire Move to Safeguard Fast-Bowling Core

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has denied Jayden Seales a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for a County Championship stint with Hampshire, prioritising workload management as part of a broader strategy to protect its fast-bowling resources.

Seales had been signed by Hampshire as a replacement for Australia’s Michael Neser, but the deal was halted after CWI intervened. The board emphasized that managing the fitness and availability of its leading pacers is critical ahead of a demanding international schedule later this year.

Alongside Seales, fellow quicks Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph are also part of a carefully structured workload plan. CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe described the approach as “proactive and precise,” aimed at ensuring the trio remain fit and at peak performance for upcoming international assignments.

West Indies face a packed calendar, including home series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Pakistan, followed by tours to India and Bangladesh. With matches across formats, the physical demands on fast bowlers are expected to be significant, prompting the board to take a cautious approach.

Seales will instead feature in the early rounds of the regional West Indies Championship, while Shamar Joseph will gradually return to match action under a structured training program. Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph—recovering from a back injury—has been granted permission to play in the Pakistan Super League, though his workload will continue to be closely monitored.

CWI also highlighted the role of the Caribbean Premier League and preparatory camps in ensuring players are match-ready before major international fixtures.

The decision underlines a shift towards long-term planning, with West Indies keen to avoid burnout and injuries among their key bowlers. By restricting franchise commitments, CWI aims to preserve the effectiveness of its pace attack during a crucial phase of the international calendar.
